Powerful earthquake in BC prompts tsunami warning in Hawaii
It has been good news so far for Hawaii this morning.
Hawaii has been under a tsunami warning after a powerful 7.7 earthquake hit off the north-central coast of B.C.
They were expecting waves between 3 and 7 feet.
Gerard Fryer with the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre says it may have been an overprediction and evacuations may not have been necessary.
He says the biggest wave so far has been 2.5 feet, while the warning threshold is 3 feet.. That measurement was after 4 waves and they are keeping a close eye on what comes next. He says the numbers usually start dropping after the 6th wave.
This all started with that quake off the B-C coast.
It was centred 200-kilometres south of Prince Rupert, and 17-kilometres below the earth's surface.
There are no reports of major damage.
There were tsunami warnings for the BC coast as well last night. The biggest wave there was 70 centimetres.
