Mississauga Teacher Charged with Sexual Assault

Posted By: Dave Bradley · 10/30/2012 2:24:00 PM

A 51 year old man has been charged in an alleged historical sexual assault.

Peel Police say the alleged offences involve a teenaged boy, and began when the boy was 16, in the fall of 1992.

Cops say they carried on for two years and police say the victim and the suspect allegedly knew each other, with the suspect being the suspects gym teacher and volleyball coach.

Michael Albert Russell, who is from Mississauga, has been charged with several counts of sexual assault and sexual exploitation.

Investigators say there could be more victims out there with Russell being a teacher most recently at Rick Hansen Secondary School in Mississauga.

Russell will be in court on December 3rd.

He taught at Applewood Heights Secondary School during the early 1990’s. He also worked at Central Peel, West Credit and JA Turner and has been at Rick Hansen Secondary for the past 14 years.

Why did they even bother bringing it up now? After so long, whats his deal!

@Leah People like you make me sick. Victim blaming is cowardly and destructive to the victim and how people treat those that had to suffer the trauma in the first place. I hope if you ever have to suffer in your lifetime someone doesn't tell you you should have kept it to yourself.

One of the best teachers I've known, we should keep an open mind about this and not jump to conclusions straight away.

It is easy to accuse someone of anything. We do not know if he did or not. The judge will decide this. He maybe innocent and now no matter what the out come guilty or not he will wear this forever. Why does it need to go this way?? The media may have ruined his career. People need to think before they accuse anyone. It maybe you one day or me that they accuse and ruin. Nobody knows yet.

To be honest I am actually in shock, I respected Mr.Russell a lot and still do to this day but if these allegations come up to be true and he is convicted I feel that every little bit of respect I had for him will fall through the floor. I hope this isn't true and this can be solved quickly but if it can't and it is true I honestly hope he burns in hell for his actions and destroying an innocent teenagers life.

Well, this is definitely a little scarring. I was on a field trip to another province with this guy & another adult supervisor. It's a scary thought, and I don't know what to believe. All I know is that the guy who has accused Mr. Russell must be in his mid-thirties at the least. The question on everybody's mind is: Why now? If it were to be true, the supposed victim could have gained the strength and courage to come out through social media. Not too long ago, a 18-year-old boy came out of the dark about his coach sexually abusing and exploiting him when he was eleven or twelve years old. These things are difficult to disclose. However, if this is untrue, then the poor man will have to carry this on his shoulders for the rest of his life, as will the school. He may even have problems getting a job or gaining people's trust. All I can say is, wait until December 3rd before drawing conclusions.

I wish former VP Marc Cianfrini was facing these allegations

I have to say I am little outraged at what has happened, Mr. Russell was by far one of the nicest gym teachers. Great coach, great man, I really hope these allegations are not true.

I did not have him as a teacher but he seemed like a nice guy. I did see him act a bit sexually with two staff members right in plain sight so I can't say I would be too surprised that they came out to be true....

Mike is being accused for something that happened 20 years ago. A few things have changed since then:

    1. The victim gained strength to make this public (what changed in the 20 years to make him voice his concerns now....?)

    2. Were there other victims over the 20 years? From personal experience, having Mike as a vball coach in high school and rep teams I did not see any signs of sexual abuse. Our teams were spending almost 5-6 days a week with this guy, either in practice, in class or at games/tournaments. I'm shocked that with the support and counselling that's available nowadays that only 1 person has come forward in the last 20 years...something seems off.

    3. Is there no value in the difference Mike has made in thousands of students lives? It would've have made sense to accuse the guy in 1992 and look at everything after that point as a huge turnaround (ie. making a lasting POSITIVE impact in students' lives over the next 20 years), but BRINGING UP the incident 20 years later doesn't seem justified....I could be wrong though. We'll have to wait and see if there's other victims.

    4. I read an article about the credible mass once and the main point was: we shouldn't consider the opinions of ANYONE/EVERYONE (especially if they have no link/history/insights about either individual involved). Instead, companies, judges and decision makers should consider the opinions of the credible mass (ie. people who have actually spent time with Mike or the Victim to understand both their perspectives/stories).

    5. If you made it to this point, thanks for reading.
