LRT Agreement Passed at City Council

Posted By: Michelle Rosa · 11/2/2012 6:20:00 AM

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford's clamour for subways, subways, subways has failed again at city hall.

City council voted 30 to 11 in favour of the master agreement with the TTC and Metrolinx, to build light rail on Sheppard East, Eglinton and Finch West and the Scarborough RT. It should be complete by 2020.

The TTC will be operating the lines, but Metrolinx will still maintain ownership.

The project is getting $8.4-billion in provincial funding, which the treasury board is expected to approve this month.

During the meeting, Mayor Rob Ford couldn't resist fighting for subways one last time, telling council they were making a big mistake if they supported light rail.

Details of the deal will become public once everything is finalized.

Congratulations to the dysfunctional city council for keeping Toronto decades behind the future! In most major cities transit has a very SMALL group of councillors involved. In Toronto we have a large group of dysfunctional people that mostly couldn't run a lemonade stand without spending $ 1 Million for a study, then 5 more studies, then ready to implement 10 years later. By then the neighbourhood has changed and no one wants lemonade.

I hope Toronto becomes a well run major city in my lifetime, not the joke its councillors have made it.

Really sad for what could be a wonderful city. We'll never be a world class city with the type of councillors we have now.

@proton Proton, well saidToronto City Council. They are a joke and getting funnier by the day, a laughing stock to the rest of Ontario. Over paid, overindulged with a sense of entitlement that rivals the teachers.

I live on Queensquay and construction is well under way for the LRT line and the Spadina line as well i'm sure in other areas and i can't wait for the new trains. it will be a little pain at the beginning but well worth it in the end

@Stug The problem is not the "right wing politicians" - it is the majority of Councillors. The truth is that most councillors are elected by name recognition. Their views on the issues are not widely publicized during elections. The voters only have time and oportunity to consider the platforms of the candidates for Mayor. The voters are the ones who do not like this transit plan and the issue will continue to be re-visited since the majority of Councillors are ignoring the wishes of the voters. The next opportunity to re-visit this will be when Hudak is elected.
