“Veterans Affairs ignores doctors reports to deny Disability Benefits”

I was on duty with the Canadian Forces in 2009 when I received the H1N1 shot (AREPANRIX by GSK GlaxoSmithKline) and had a severe adverse reaction resulting in PERMANENT neurological, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and respiratory symptoms: dizziness, vertigo, irregular heart rhythms, shortness of breath, muscle weakness and pain, and numbness in hands and feet. My physical fitness changed from special forces fit to that of a 70 year old in a matter of days. I advised the military doctors that my change in health occurred following the H1N1 vaccination and although they noted my concerns on 8 different occasions, they did not investigate the link. Due to the severity of my symptoms I was unable to continue performing my duties and was released from the military. Following my release, the military determined I was disabled and altered my release record due to the severity of my symptoms. Two years later Alberta's health officer in charge of the Immunization program for Alberta reviewed my medical history and verified I had an adverse reaction to the H1N1 vaccine. I applied to Veterans Affairs for disability benefits and was denied on 3 separate occasions. Even though I was on duty training personnel when I received the vaccination, Veterans Affairs stated “There is no evidence that your barriers to reestablishment are related to your service time”. Regarding another application, a Veterans Affairs doctor reviewed my file and stated my condition was not related to service, ignored medical information from several of my doctors, altered the conclusion of one of my neurologists reports, and speculated that had the military determined my diagnosis was related to service there was no medical treatment that would relieve my symptoms. I forwarded this report to my neurologist who indicated the doctors conclusions were false and that he should have consulted a specialist who was familiar with my condition and symptoms. Veterans Affairs admitted the doctor had made errors, but refused to review the original application advising me to appeal the decision through an Administrative review which would take another 6 – 8 months. Since I left the Canadian Forces 19 months ago I have been hospitalized on numerous occasions totalling 30 days. Spent more than $10,000 paying for medication and therapy to manage my symptoms. I am now unable to afford the specialized physiotherapy which costs thousands of dollars each year and am unable to work due to my disability.

@Gord What happened to you and the treatmentyour received from Veterans Affairs as well as the Canadian Forces was appalling and shameful. I think you and others with such severe adverse reactions to that H1N1 vaccine have a strong case for a class action suit against the makers, GlaxoSmithKline. However, if you were one of the protesters at the Remembrance Day ceremony at Toronto City Hall today, that was the worst possible time & place to act out, and equally appalling and shameful.

I had an H1N1 shot and had no adverse reaction, even though I am obese, had open heart surgery 15 years ago and lead a sedentary lifestyle. Guess you were just lucky.

I'd like to know what the hellt hat has to do with a rememberance day service? Absolutely nothing thats what. This is the most disgusting and disrespectful thing I've ever heard of. Anyone who is protesting at a rememberance Day service should be arrested for disturbing the Peace, slander, hate crimes. Anything like that. These people gave their lives in the Wars for YOUR freedoms and YOUR rights and you repay the favour by protesting a service set to remember them? Lest we forget has lost all meaning. If something like this is happening...We've obviously already forgotten.

@Ashton @Ashton You do not even know what the protest was about but here you are condemning it for not being relevant to Remembrance Day when in fact it was. Remembrance Day is being used to support Canadas mission in Afghanistan, if anyone has the right to oppose the NATO-led war and occupation of Afghanistan, it would most certainly be those 2 Afghan women who were protesting with their banner.

@Ashton Ashton you see why it happens, the liberals & the nut case lefties want to protest anything that makes any sense. Why were they not arrested same reason we cant disturb the radical idiots..SEE THE NEXT CPL COMMENTS IF THERE EVER WERE MORE MORONIC ANSWERS TO YOU I CANT IMAGINE WHAT IT COULD BE. .had anyone hung a well deserved beating on theese idiots they would have been arrested
because this is the low level our society has sunk too. Theese idiots dont even understand the reason they can protest & draw welfare is because our vets have fought & died for them. The Afgan women i dont even want to comment ,try that in their country or origin

Remembrance day is the single most important power elite ritual. The entire charade hangs on our obedience to their wars. It's sickening. Such hypocrisy, parading freedoms and rights while colonized and occupying stolen, Native land.

@Charles You give the perfect example of a special interest group w/no clue about context or pragmatism. You're so overworked by a singular POV you can't even see the forest for the trees. Get a life, get a clue.

The First Nations people have lost all my respect and yet I would bet some of them fought for our country. Do they forget they would not be free in this country without our veterans. Regardless of political feelings this was not the time and place and I could care less what happens to them now. My grandfather died defending their rights. Let them drown in their bottles then we don't have to deal with them anymore. Can we say pissed????

If I had been there my first move after paying respects to my Grandfather would have been to WATERBOY as many of those a$$holes as I could!!!!! I was sitting in our living room with 4 & 7 year old son and daughter and to think that during the moment of silence some group of half wit bums starts shouting!!!! I can't believe they weren't arrested and I also can't believe that a good # of them weren't laid out right in the street with a good shiner as a reminder that REMEMBRANCE DAY IS A DAY TO REMEMBER OUR SOLDIERS WHO HAVE DIED AND SHOW RESPECT TO THOSE WHO ARE STILL WITH US OR SERVING TODAY!!!!!
If you have a problem with government deal with it in a way that doesn't tarnish one of the last ways we show respect for those who played a part in making this great country what it is today! Write letters!! Go picket at Parliament Hill, BUT DON'T EVER DISRESPECT SOLDIERS AND VETERANS ON REMEMBRANCE DAY!!!
I feel for any veterans who aren't being treated properly or supported for their efforts.
I don't know how any of those amoeba who were there today can sleep at night....
Some of the comments here so far are sickening, I am truly disgusted by a good portion of what society has become.....
I thought I should post on behalf of all those who still give a sh!t.....

      @Matt Well said.
I was staying at the Sheraton with my family at the time and was thoroughly disgusted with the ignorant actions of those protesting. I applaude those who confronted these jackasses.

@Matt I felt the same way when I witnessed this intrusive demonstration during the Remembrance Day service today!!! What a classless act and disgraceful display of ignorance by these protestors Surely the police could have laid charges of "disturbing the peace" against those who showed such disrespect for our veterans, their families & others paying tribute, during this solemn occasion. Without our vets' valiant efforts, and huge loss of lives in the World Wars in particular, they would not even have the RIGHT nor FREEDOM to publicly protest at all. Apparently nothing is sacred anymore. Have to wonder why there is little to no law enforcemen eithert, which in my view clearly demonstrates the continuing downward spiral of Canadian society.

does anyone have any pics showing the conflict between protestors and the crowd ?
  9. Martin posted on 11/12/2012 09:36 AM
They started out in the middle of Queen street holding a black banner and were at first not saying anything. They started arguing with a woman who was walking by and then a cop came over and tried to grab their banner off them and tell them to move to the sidewalk. The did after a few more cops showed up. Then they waited till the 2 minutes of silence and decided to start yelling and chanting. That brought out the two guys from the crowd who confronted them.. From what I could see, one of the guys who confronted them knocked a protestor to the ground, and then the police moved pretty fast when they saw the crowd was taking matters into their own hands. From the looks on the protestors face afterward, I don't think they were quite prepared for the crowd turning on them, and they hightailed it out of there. Cops probably told them that they had their one chance to go and to use it, or they would let the crowd have their way if they didnt. Kudos to the two guys who stepped up.

ship EVERY ONE of those ungrateful pieces of s... to any number of countries where there's no rule of law, especially where there are no UN or NATO or other forces that are trying to help local citizens, and DON'T EVER LET THEM RETURN.

How disappointing and shameful. Young women - born here - heritage is Afghanistan? Maybe educators should consider strengthening the teaching of our participation in wars around the world so that 'new Canadians' and their precious offspring would gain an understanding (I was going to say a better understanding; however, I don't think they have the basis in the first place) of what it means to grateful Canadians to live in this Country and the importance of paying honour to our war vets for 2 minutes once a year. Is this so much to ask, is the burden so great that these two ladies could not restrain themselves for those 2 minutes?Surely I am not the only Canadian - I am also first generation; however, my Dad fought in the 2nd WW for Canada - who feels like my heritage is being melted away day by day. All of the traditions my parents celebrated and taught to us and in turn have been imparted to my children are constantly in question. I welcome new imigrants - come - be free to celebrate and continue your heritage that you all hold so dear but for 'My' God's sake, quit pushing mine to the side. And the worst part of all of this is that our politicians, educators and the like do not stand up for our original historical beliefs and celebrations. Sometimes I think we are just too kind of a nation with a weak spine. There was a time when I would have said that I was not prejudice but today I think I just might be. I don't want to be but I hold resentments to certain cultures who I always gave acknowledgement to. I don't feel like this has been returned to me.

those protestors either born outside Canada or first generation should ask themselves why their families chose Canada. Is there the remotest chance it's because of the freedom and safety and opportunities they have in Canada vs their country of origin?

Do they think that grows on trees? We enjoy the wonderful freedom, safety and opportunities in part because our veterans fought for that freedom from various oppressors and/or would-be oppressors.

I wonder if any of those protesters were Jews? If so, then we have a real story. The veteran from whom I purchased my poppy was far too old to be in Afghanistan. The mere fact that veterans HAVE to sell poppies to finance their activities is another issue that should make us think twice about the way that we "reward" them for their service. I don't see former Members of Parliament having to sell flowers in order to finance their pensions, do you!

@Jim forcing MPs to sell manure would be more appropriate
