Gerard Kennedy Joins Ontario Liberal Leadership Race

Posted By: Suzette Francis · 11/12/2012 7:49:00 AM

Former MP and MPP Gerard Kennedy is taking another shot at the Ontario Liberal Party leadership.

Kennedy, who lost to Dalton McGuinty in the 1996 provincial leadership race by just 140 votes, made the announcement on CP24 this morning.

He represented west-end Toronto ridings at the provincial and federal levels for more than a decade until he lost his seat in the 2011 federal election.

Kennedy joins former cabinet ministers Charles Sousa, Sandra Pupatello, Glen Murray and Kathleen Wynne in the race to succeed McGuinty.

Eric Hoskins also resigned from cabinet last week, a prerequisite for making a leadership bid, and is expected to announce his intentions within days.

Potential candidates have until November 23rd to launch their bids and the party will choose a new leader in late January.

So they'll choose a new leader, but will they choose a new path or stay with McGuinty's destructive policies?

@Jake Stinson Great to see a progressive politician stepping up to keep Tea Party Tim from power.

During Kennedy interview he said there'd be no need for teacher legislation. If that isn't a hint as to continued drunken Liberal spending habits I don't know what is.

Ah yes, the man who foisted Stephane Dion on the federal Liberals wants to take a crack at damaging the provincial Liberals. It's too late, Gerard, McGuinty has already done the damage!
