Mother Wants Oak Trees Removed at School Because of Allergy Threat

Posted By: Michelle Rosa · 11/13/2012 6:02:00 AM

The mother of two kids going to St. Stephen Catholic elementary school in Vaughan has an unusual request of the city, but she swears it's all in an effort to provide a safe environment for children.

Donna Giustizia wants all the oak trees removed near the school because she believes the acorns from those trees pose a deadly threat to her two children. They have severe tree-nut allergies and while the school is nut-free, she thinks the acorns from the oak trees also pose a threat.

She told Vaughan's committee of the whole, "Many of the students unfortunately mistake the acorns for hazelnuts as they look similar. I implore council to consider the mental well-being of these children and the cruel and unusual environment we would be subjecting these students to if we do not relocate these trees, not to mention the fear that could arise should these acorns eventually be used as bullying tactics."

The Star quotes medical authorities as saying they are unaware of any cases of anaphylactic allergic reaction to acorns and if it were to occur it would only be if the child were forced to eat acorns, which are very bitter.

It's worth noting that Donna Giustizia has received awards for her work in helping Canadians diagnosed with anaphylaxis. In fact Vaughan City council gave her the Civic Hero Award in 2010.

Vaughan council requested a report to be presented at the next meeting, on Nov. 20.

If indeed the child has this alergy it would be a simple thing to do a skin prick analysis as is done with many potential alergy suspicitions.
No drought the mother has had this done in the past and should not object.
The data shows that Acorns do and can cause reactions form serious to minor .. But the product must be ingested. There is no definitive evidence that the problem exists unless ingested.
Surely the child can be instructed not to eat the tree nut.

Won't someone please think of the children!!!!!!!!

Cut down all the trees so we have no nuts, kill all the bees and the flowers (but don't use any pesticides). Only through the eradication of all natural threats may our chikldren finally live in complete safety.

thank heavens people like this shreik the loudest so we can establish thresholds for stupidity.

Seriously?!?!!?? I have a much better idea. Rather then cut down a couple of trees that will be around long after this.... woman and her children, why not send the children to another school? In fact, let's get all the kids who are hyper allergic and put them all at the same school. Then, the rest of the school board can get back to letting the kids be kids.

The mother must be removed from her children's home as she is the biggest NUT and therefore a health threat to these children. Why hasn't Vaughan's Children's Aid Society acted yet?

Does this mean that because my friend's child is celiac we should outlaw all sandwiches in the school.... I'm so tired of everyone having to accomodate the few...maybe it's time for this parent to teach her child how to deal with the issues of the rest of their lives.... or perhaps she feels that we should destroy all nut bearing trees in the world so that her children do not have to think

First, medical authorities have been quoted as saying there is no known allergy to acorns.

More importantly, this mother is quoted as saying, "Many of the students unfortunately mistake the acorns for hazelnuts as they look similar." That is all well and good, but if her children made this mistake, are they not aware that they have such a severe allergy?!? If so, they will avoid anything that even remotely appears to look like something they are supposed to stay away from.

This highlights the stupidity of banning things (peanuts, tree nuts, bananas, etc) from schools: it is human nature to be more careless when one is under the belief that one is in a so-called 'safe' environment. It is the responsibility of the person with the allergy to be aware that dangers are around them and that they take appropriate actions to avoid those dangers, and be on their toes at all times.

Banning substances (or cutting down trees) gives the false sense of security that everything is perfectly fine. Banning something has the effect of instilling the belief that nobody will break that ban, but we all know that is not the case. Even if the ban is observed, we are talking about children. Little Johnny that loves peanut butter knows he can't bring it to school, and follows that rule faithfully. But little Johnny has it on toast with breakfast before going to school. Little Johnny washes up after breakfast as well as most other children (i.e.: not very well) and goes to school with traces of peanut butter on his hands and face. Little Johnny touches all sorts of things at school and all those children with severe peanut allergies behave in school the way anyone would with a peanut allergy would when in a place they believe is "peanut free" - they let their guard down because there is nothing to worry about at school.

I would like to see the medical reports that backs up her bizarre claim. Internet searches state what she claims is not the case--so where's her proof? And how many children actually pick up acorns from the ground, 'confusing them with hazelnuts' and eat them, when they have a nut allergy, no less? (And do these children carry a nutcracker with them, in case they stumble across some delicious hazelhuts?:)
My child, for one, doesn't pick up "food" off the ground and eat it. Children are much smarter than she is giving them credit for. I think this lady needs to find a legitimate hobby. She has too much time on her hands.
Not just writing this to satisfy my overwhelming desire to mock this ridiculousness but also because it actually makes me extremely angry such a whack job is requesting trees in a public parkland are removed to satisfy her bizarre unfounded claims, or possible desire for attention, like it is a right that is owed her.
I understand she received a Civic Hero Award in the past. It's a shame she will now be known as the crazy Acorn Mom, instead of remembered as someone who contributed in a worthwhile way..

    Are they really at risk?

'we comfortably recommend that people with a nut allergy should be able to have contact with acorns or pine cones without risk of an allergic reaction'

    õ.O

Forget acorns. Obviously toilets are the REAL danger to our children, due to the ongoing threat of swirlys. Remove toilets from our schools, so that our children can finally be safe from the bullies! Also underwear! Every hanes waistband is a beacon to bullies and their evil wedgies! Ban all of the underwear! And hair! It gets pulled by bullies! So shave it all off!

Seriously though, my heart goes out to all the teachers who have to put up with these types of parents. "Concern Trolls" like this woman make life so much harder than it needs to be.

Aw, come on. Put a "muzzle" on a kids (just kidding), But seriously, with all the medication today, special devices and so on, there should be something that would work?!
I am allergic to stupid coffe. Coffe is everywhere!!! Should I start to demand that all Tim Horton's be closed? Should I start walking with a sign and demand a total ban on coffe in Canada?
It's absurd! Can't we all get along. Grrrr,....

I guess we should kill all the squirrels and other small animals once they move the trees.Squirrels have a habit of dropping there nuts. And the kid might walk by one.

I think this woman needs to stop and think. Is this approach setting a good and reasonable example for her children, in solving their problems in the future? She may have a track record of doing good work in the past, but she has gone too far here. There are other solutions to allergies, that do not involve moving trees. Perhaps she should be campaigning against toxic material usage in home building, or overuse of antibiotics and antibacterials, or toxic waste dumps. Misspent energy.

Donna, cutting down the oak trees is frankly "nuts", or should I say "acorns"! Have the School custodian clear away the acorns on a daily basis. There are oak trees everywhere.

@Glenn Carey If she is so concerned , she should pick them up. School custodians don't work for the city and what do you want them to do next, chase away squirrels?
