Diesel vs Electric train fight goes to court

Posted By: Siobhan Morris · 11/18/2012 6:10:00 PM

A group opposed to diesel trains on the planned link between Pearson Airport-Union rail link will be in court on Monday.

The Clean Train Coalition will present arguments in support of its application for a judicial review of a decision by Metrolinx to use diesel trains rather than electric ones.

An NDP private member's bill to make the switch was up for 2nd reading when the Ontario legislature was prorogued.

The Air-Rail Link is supposed to be done in time for the Pan Am Games in 2015.

A rail link is needed. Why don't we do it right from the get-go and make the trains electric rather than deal with a potentially expensive retro-fit project somewhere down the line. If diesel is all we can do right now then so be it but somewhere down the line they will be made electric. IMHO let's do it right the first time.

@Kevin I agree! The World Health Organization just reclassified diesel exhaust to be on their number 1 list of things that cause cancer. There are 300,000 people living right beside this corridor who the Toronto Medical Officer of Health says are at risk if it is not built to run with electric trains. Dr Ian Clark at Sick Kids Hospital, who is a cancer researcher, says they should go electric. City council says they should go electric. Metrolinx has chosen the Air rail Link as its system priority for electrification.
SO WHY DOES METROLINX THINK IT IS GOOD TO PUT DIESEL TRAINS ON THE AIR RAIL LINK IN THE NAME OF A TWO WEEK SPORTS EVENT?

Compare Vancouver's system to what Metrolinx wants to build. 2and class? How about 4th class?
