Sled Dog Killer Sentenced to 3 Years Probation

Posted By: Newstalk 1010 · 11/22/2012 9:17:00 PM

A man who pleaded guilty to the slaughter of dozens of sled dogs will not spend time in prison.

Instead, a B.C. Supreme Court judge has sentenced Robert Fawcett to three years of probation for causing unnecessary pain and suffering to nine sled dogs that died in the cull near Whistler after business slumped following the Vancouver Olympics.

Court heard wrenching evidence at Fawcett's sentencing hearing today about how he felt pushed to kill the dogs.

His lawyer, Greg Diamond, read a statement from Fawcett saying a part of him died along with the animals he viewed as pets.

The Crown and the defence agreed probation was an appropriate punishment, with Crown lawyer Nicole Gregoire noting Fawcett received death threats, saw his wife and young children forced into hiding, and had a mental break down.

The horrific incident became public in January 2011 after a worker's compensation claim for post-traumatic stress disorder was leaked.

I think his "punishment" definitely does NOT fit the crime. It makes me really sad that someone is able to slaughter 56 animals who can no longer "serve" his purpose. They can't make him money anymore so he just gets rid of them like they are garbage?
They are living, breathing creatures who deserve to be treated with respect and love. I really don't believe ANY effort was made on his part to try and find homes for these poor dogs as they were not looked at as something deserving of his time once the money was taken out of the equation.

The laws against animal cruelty are a joke as are the "punishments" handed out.

...as for his "mental breakdown" (I smell BS on that one btw...a ploy to try and garner sympathy, plain and simple)....maybe he should of thought of that before he heartlessly killed his "pets" because they couldn't bring in any more $$ for him.

@Tracey I agree with you 100% Tracy. Not only is he trying to garner sympathy, he is trying to get money for his "post traumatic stress syndrome" for Workers' Compensation. Hope that doesn't fly. The right part of him didn't die along woth animals. 3 years probation.....what crap!
