UPDATE: Grade 2 teacher, coach killed in hit & run

Posted By: Siobhan Morris · 11/23/2012 4:58:00 PM

A west-end school community is mourning the loss of a teacher.

35-year-old Tom Samson was killed Friday morning while riding his bike near Landsdowne & Davenport.

Samson was hit by 2 minivans as he crossed the street, the driver of the 1st didn't stop.

The grade 2 teacher had been at Swansea Public School, near High Park for 8 years.  Samson coached chess & boys' basketball there.

Grief councillors were at Swansea Friday to help any students or staff members who wanted to talk.  They will be back again on Monday.

A trust fund has been set up for Samson’s wife at the Bank of Montreal near Windermere & Bloor.  It isn't clear if the couple had any children.

The group Advocacy for Respect for Cyclists are planning a memorial ride for Samson next Friday.

Police are still looking for a red or burgundy Chrysler van with front end damage which hit Samson & took off.

He was a wonderful teacher, and will be deeply missed by all his students and their parents. Tom rode his bike to work and back home almost every day. He was genuine, and honest. He cared about his students very much. He was a great chess player and challenged dozens of students in a school chess tournament at once. Tom spoke at least four languages too. He had two little daughters and a lovely wife.

Words can't express how deep the sorrow is for this amazingly humble and inspiring teacher.
