Petition asks Rob Ford to step down as mayor

Posted By: Siobhan Morris · 11/28/2012 9:29:00 PM

Rob Ford has vowed to fight "tooth and nail" to keep his job as mayor.

But a group calling itself Concerned Citizens of Toronto is asking him to accept Justice Charles Hackland's ruling & clear out the mayor's desk.

Ford will be in court December 5th asking for a stay of the decision. An appeal process will get going January 7th.

Concerned Citizens of Toronto says Rob Ford's poor judgement is putting the city's economic stability at risk.

They have created an online petition & letter-writing campaign asking the Rob Ford to step down to protect Toronto's economic future.

They argue Ford's leadership has lead to a "perception of corruption" that could damage short and long-term investments in the city & stunt job growth.  The group says the longer the mayor's legal fight drags on, the more the perception will grow.

There kidding right???? The man is actually good for the city, unlike Miller and his spend-a-holic cronies. Makes me want to puke, the people voted him in...so he should stay. Period.!

These people must think Torontonians are morons to believe they want Ford to step down to protect Toronto's economic future. That's as funny and pathetic is Smitherman talking about accountability re Ford.

Since they hate democracy so much they should move to a country such as N. Korea where they'll be much happier, and they can take their lefty buddies with them

@proton Judging by your rhetoric, you just might be an even bigger idiot than Rob Ford himself lol The only people dumber than Ford are those who voted for him.

Maybe someone should start a petition wanting him to stay and do the appeals. These people are such know it alls. So glad I no longer live in Toronto, although here in the shwa we have our own problems, like the highest taxes in the durham region, but really we don't have a bunch of busy bodies and lefties running the show or trying to run it here!!

Rob Ford won the highest percentage of votes for ANY municipality in Canada, and this group of organized leftists expect us to believe they are "Concerned Citizens of Toronto"??? HAHAHAHAHA. How disingenuous and transparent this entitled bunch have become. Much like Mammoliti the deceitful back stabber who immediately resigned from the Mayor's Executive Committee the day the verdict was rendered, claiming his constituents wanted him to be free to vote with his conscience. HAHAHAHA ... now there's someone who should've been kicked to the curb long ago!!

This petition is a typical NDP/Liberal tactic, by people who routinely break the law during elections, with unions putting $millions into their political/ advertising budget calling themselves Working Families. These are the REAL criminals, so two-faced you never know which mouth they'll talk out of next! Along with most of the leftists on city council, the whole bunch of hypocrites need to be fully investigated, charged & dismissed for all the infractions, conflicts of interest and outright fraud they have committed over decades at the public trough!

Rob Ford has every right to due process, fighting back against this unjust mock trial and subversion of the whole democratic process. He was elected with a strong mandate that respected taxpayers by stopping backroom deals just like this one, at city hall. The judgement was clearly politically motivated to destroy this mandate, since Ford's media & political detractors couldn't deter or beat him, the first half of his term in office.

I predict this too will backfire on these thugs, whether Rob Ford runs next year or in 2014, bringing him back with an even stronger mandate & hopefully voting OUT most of these power hungry, dysfunctional leftists on council, so the serious work repeatedly delayed can finally get done. Let's start with the thirty year overdue SUBWAYS most Torontonians voted for in the first place. Time to BAN all the petty trolls & moles making such a mess down there at city hall!! The ones who voted to ban bullets and bags. Rob wasn't even at city hall for that, but he won the reversal vote anyway. HA!

@ctwr9-11 It's right wing conservative biggotts like you and Rob Ford that have casted a black cloud over Toronto. Your little right wing bubble in Toronto is about to pop. Go live in Calgary and become a gun toting cowboy! Toronto is liberal and lying sacks of shit like ford are not appreciated nor tolerated in our democracy. Stop blaming the "lefties" for Toronto's problems. You fashists are the real problem.

    Why all this drama?
    1. Ford defied the Municipal Conflict of Interest Act
    2. Ford was found guilty and removed as per the same Act
    3. Council should appoint a new mayor from within its own ranks in order to save time and money.
    4. A by-election should be held within the minimum time framework to fill Ford's council seat.
    5. 2 years from now the Toronto citizenry can turn out in order to deliver its verdict again ... wherever that may fall on the left / right scale.

@Only Common Sense Too simplistic. Nothing like this happens to councilors, police, public officials, etc. It's not strictly about being the law. Every day we file to fight in court, laws we have clearly broken; speeding, accident, parking tickets. Break and enter thieves fight and sometimes win.

Saying, "He broke the law" isn't enough for what has transpired here. If our judicial system was that consistent with all verdicts, I might be amenable to the decision. But we know exceptions are made all the time for crimes far worse than raising 3 grand on city letterhead; none of which went into his pocket. If this incident was the beginning to corruption in the Toronto City council, I would be the first to say, "Nip it in the bud and get rid of this bum". We are a long past that point; Just read the rest of this blog.

Truly something more is at work. nothing like this is 'only common sense'.

The replies regarding the plight of Rob Ford are eerily similar to those regarding the 'leftist group' and the 'conserative' group that was spewed during the recent election for President of U.S.? Has the conversation really become so simple that people of Toronto will pick sides that are not all that distinguishable? Liberal? Conservative? At times that are advantageous to the other, each will mirror the opposite position. To tout 'democracy' as being the hallmark of the debate and the platform of Rob Fords current dilemna, is rhetoric used to appeal to the masses. That is not what one would consider a thoughtful and informed debate. If you are going to support Rob Ford, please highlight his accomplishments (although as a Hamiltonian I'll look them up myself so I don't repeat inaccurate facts). I suggest that Newstalk 1010 implement a 'fact checker' link to their website lol, it might get to that point. Althought the judicial system has its flaws, it is intrinsically linked to democracy that the hard core consertavists are using as the base of their arguement. I have seen posts now about the background information of the Justice that made the endorsement. An accomplished, educated man makes a decision bound by the rules in the Act; and now he is put up to slaughter. If Mr. Ford is a fabulous Mayor, then his actions post-ruling shall speak to that...so far, I haven't seen it.
    1. anne posted on 11/29/2012 09:27 AM
@Julie Bridgen An accomplished, educated man the Justice may be. But, his punishment does not fit the crime, he didn't have to vacate his seat. Paul Magder and Clayton Ruby need to be really looked at. What was ther agenda, except for that litlle weasel that startedthe whole ball rolling and what about the unions, Trust me they are involved somehow, some way. Just who are the "Concerned Citizens of Toronto" anyway? The venom being spewed against Ford is unbelievable and cruel. He is a human being with feelings too and people are just delighting in his downfall.

@Julie Bridgen It's easy to determine the significant accomplishments of Mayor Ford; just look them up and read them. To save you the effort, it's municipal savings to the tune of hundreds of millions of dollars... quite surprising that even you haven't seen or heard anything of this?

Kyle Raye follows the rules but spent $12,000 of tax payer money on his own private going away party and not one Concerned citizen of Toronto spoke up.

Smitherman blows one billion tax payer dollars on ehealth and not one Concerned citizen of Toronto spoke up.

McGuibty blows one billion tax payer dollars on moving power plants around in order to save the Liberals seats and not one Concerned citizen of Toronto spoke up.

Sandra Bussen used taxpayer dollars to advertise her name on the a girls soccer team jerseys and not one Concerned citizen of Toronto spoke up.

The St. Clair right of way construction went $100 million over budget and delayed over a year and not one Concerned citizen of Toronto spoke up.

The Peter St homeless shelter went $10 million over budget and not one Concerned citizen of Toronto spoke up.

TCHC executives voted themselves $3 million in severance pay when they quit, no fired , quit and not one Concerned citizen of Toronto spoke up.

Rob Ford uses City letter head to raise $3000 to help underprivileged kids and then votes when he was not supposed to vote and the Concerned Citizens of Toronto are all up in arms.

Makes you question WHAT ARE THEY REALLY CONCERNED ABOUT?

And, Daniel & Dawn who posted earlier are still the stupidest people in Toronto (and disingenouis...and yes I probably spelled it wrong)
    1. proton posted on 11/29/2012 09:44 AM
      @Vince You nailed it.

Let's also not forget the renovation at city hall which was supposed to only cost taxpayers $ 16 Million as councillors insisted the balance of $ 24 Million was going to come from the private sector. Now the cost is up to $ 50 Million+ and ZERO private sector money, so our genius councillors voting for this have increased the cost to taxpayers from $ 16 Million to over $ 50 Million.

In the private sector where people have to be accountable anyone running this type of sham would have been fired long ago. Instead these bozo clowns remain in office. To add insult to injury, polls suggest olivia chow would win an election for mayor.

I think the inmates are running the asylum

@Vince So where are the lawsuits & what were the verdicts? This is like blaming your not getting a job you wanted on the person who was hired. Not all of those cases were before the judge, Mr. Ford's was. How it came to be there, whether it was a witch hunt, whether lefty pinkos were involved, whether every other person on council now & ever before has broken the law was not on trial.
The facts of this incident were judged in court & the outcome is that Mr. Ford was in a conflict of interest situation & needs to be held accountable.
I'm not saying you're incorrect about anything you stated - I'm honestly not that well informed. I'm just saying that they weren't being judged in this trial & that is the only matter at hand right now, whether or not you think that's fair.

@Silvano & Alida Mio Olivia Chow is the next move. They have to make up for lost 'spending time' while ford was in power. Ideally, they'll have her in mid-term so that she can run as the 'incumbent' during the next go-round. I've already seen her face on tv, for the first time in many years; this is happening.

"Concerned Citizens of Toronto"....is this a joke? Where were the concerned citizens when Miller and Carroll (budget chief) were running the show? Money thrown around like drunken sailors. Rob has done more in two years than Miller did his entire time as Mayor. He was voted in fair and square by the electorate, but left leaning councilors haven't given him a moment's peace. I'm sick of the whining from Vaughn, Carroll, Perks, Davis, Fletcher, McConnell, etc. Let's finish the job next election and clear house with the rest of those space wasters.
    1. barb posted on 11/30/2012 04:36 PM
@Mike You took the words out of my mouth and many, many people who feel the same way. Each and every councillor you mentioned is a joke and you are so right, they have not given him a moment's peace and have tried to undermine everything he says and everything he does, even going as far as to attack his appearance. They are space wasters and I hope that they are gone, gone, gone right into oblivion next election. Also, investigate Paul Magder, Clayton Ruby, and that litlle twerp who instigated this. WHEN Rob Ford is back, things will change.

    1. Paul57 posted on 12/01/2012 09:04 PM
@roseanne Lidstone Let's be clear Roseanne, you did not 'give us our chance'. I would put Rob Ford's record for his years in council up against anyone else's before or after. Unless you haven't been listening or reading for the last few years, there have been many issues far more serious for which those in authority have been excused.

Two years ago, the electorate made their decision. Sometimes change needs to come in the form of an unpolished personality, unlike the slick greasy salesmen you Ford haters seem to prefer.

      Careful what you wish for.
    2. proton posted on 12/02/2012 11:47 AM
@roseanne Lidstone You talk about disdain for the office. Let's see - Kyle Rae spending $12,000 of OUR tax dollars to throw himself a party. Well over $ 100 MIL of OUR tax dollars wasted on St. Clair streetcar. Miller wasting hundreds of millions of OUR tax dollars by overpaying for work so he can lick the unions' asses.
      (running out of space here).

Ford was wrong yet he's failed and the above have all had an A+.

Either you're so rich you don't care about your money being wasted OR you don't pay any taxes and are living off those of us that do OR you love having your hard-earned money wasted.

      Which is it?

Currently Mayor Ford holds the highest number of formal complaints lodged against his office in the history of Toronto’s mayorialship.

The following list of legal entanglements (citing allegations of corruption supported by evidence) that have been either dismissed, are in an ongoing legal proceeding, or are due for processing pending the corresponding investigation: .

    - Boardwalk Pub Libel Suit
    - Toronto Star Press Ban (Integrity Investigation Request)
    - Improper Donation Solicitation (Integrity Investigation)
    - Failure to Account for Office Spending (Integrity Investigation Request)
    - Election Finance Compliance Audit
    - Improper Use of Office Phone in On-Air Campaigning (Integrity Investigation Request)
    - Medical Officer of Health Slander (Integrity Investigation Request)
    - Conflict of Interest Suit
    - Improper Use of City Resources (Integrity Investigation Request)
    - Compromising the Civic-Appointments Process (Ombudsman’s Report)

These are the accumulated cases against Mayor Ford -- and he is only halfway through his first term. I feel there are sufficient allegations of corruption to least warrant a petition for dismissal.

@Sean Riddolls Sean, first of all your source, The Torontoist is soooo anti Ford they border on fanaticism. Second,, most of these "legal entanglements" are perpetuated by the lefties who hate him so much they can't see straight and a lot of mean spirited, like minded people who would do and say anything to get him oput so they could work on their own agenda.....case in point that disgusting little weasel wannabe who hung out at City Hall during the Miller regime.....he is the one who urged Paul Magder to launch his law suit, and in turn get his pal Clayton Ruby to represent them in court for "free". Nobody in their right mind wil take your list seriously especially considering the source you took it from. These charges are all trumped up. Don't worry though, if this terrible conspiracy works and Ford is ousted and these peolple get the Mayor they want, man oh man, are they going to be watched to the point that everything they do better be perfect.

as i tell my kids, the lazier these people are the easier it is for hardworking people as their competition is lessened.
