Water Rates Going Up

Posted By: Russ Courtney · 11/29/2012 4:19:00 PM

If you live in Toronto, your water bill is going up 9% next year.

City council has approved the 2013 water budget which will see the average home pay an extra $67 dollars.

It's the eighth year that rates have jumped by 9% in order to pay for aging infrastructure. There is another 9% increase slated for next year with further increases expected to be close to the rate of inflation.

The city says water rates are still lower than other municipalities in the area.

Next year's waste budget was also approved by council on Wednesday and garbage fees in 2013 will be frozen, which has been attributed by the Chair of the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee Denzil Minnan-Wong to savings from contracting out garbage west of Yonge St.

Critics have said not raising rates limits efforts to increase recycling.

Council voted not to charge charitable and non-profit groups that had been eligible for garbage fee exemptions in the past.

This just proves the incompetence of current and past councils. Instead of wasting time and taxpayer money on stupid items from small-minded people there should have been a long-term plan to provide funding for infrastructure many years ago, to spread out the funding for improving infrastructure. Same concept applies for subways. Problem is we have Canada's biggest city run by little people who lack the competence to run a lemonade stand.

If it weren't so sad it'd be funny!

@proton Infrastructure gets neglected because politicians run on 4 year plans and run on the platform that they will cut cut cut tax and balance budgets at the same time. The long term projects and costs tend to get brushed under the carpet and left for the next guy to deal with.

The city's infrastructure has been crippling for years because of its overuse of harmful road salt which corrodes the sewers and destroys concrete. An increase is not justifiable if there is no plan to reduce dependency.
