Public Sector's Sick Days Costing Canada Billions

Posted By: Michelle Rosa · 12/4/2012 1:16:00 PM

A new report suggests public sector employees in Canada take nearly five more sick, disability and personal days per year than Canadians working in the private sector.

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business says those extra days cost up to $3.5 billion per year, noting some public sector workers can bank unused sick days, then take a lump-sum payment or use the days to retire early. The CFIB says federal government employees take the most time off, averaging 15.2 sick, disability and personal days per year compared to 12.9 days in the overall public sector and 8.2 days in the private sector.

The federation says there are variances within the private sector, depending on the size of the employer. Employees in businesses with fewer than 20 employees averaged 6.7 days off, while those in firms with more than 500 employees took 9.1 days, which is still lower than the public sector average.

In its report, the CFIB calls for sick day allotments to be aligned with those offered in the private sector and for the accumulation of unused sick days to be discontinued.

``I don't think anybody believes that public sector workers just get sick more often, yet something makes them feel entitled to more time off,'' said CFIB president and CEO Dan Kelly. ``Obviously, we want to be compassionate when people are truly not well, but the current system has entrenched a feeling of entitlement to those days off that has very little to do with being sick.''

``We need to change the system so everybody's playing by the same rules,'' said Kelly.

More shit induced by the wonderful unions. The unions have no business in the Public Sector and this is exactly why. It costs the taxpayers billions with the ridiculous shit that the unions negotiate, couple that with lazy slobs with the union mentality and it's just a free for all. Ridiculous and the taxpayers are on the hook for this while most of us are lucky to have any pension plan or sick days, we have to pay for these slugs. Change the system, taxpayers need a level playing field and people on the public teat should not be more entitled.

@jamie Unions are a good thing...I dont mind paying taxes which help give people a living wage and decent benefits including sick days. I worked at whole foods and they dont give any sick days to their employees. People called in sick ,they just didnt get any income support, so calling in sick became a stressful issue. Furthermore, the pay is a lot less in union free jobs making it more stressful to lose pay by calling in sick..Yes union workers are "lazy slobs", just like jews are cheap and blacks are criminals...You are just an ignorant bigot. WORKERS UNITE!!!!

I've worked in both the public and private sector, so I think I have a perspective on this issue. In the public sector, when you're sick, you stay home and don't infect your co-workers or the public. In the private sector, it was always a mixed bag, depending on management, how the company was doing, and the time of year. In some cases in private sector jobs co-workers would drag themselves into work no matter how sick they were (and infect others in the process) because they wanted to show off to management how dedicated & hard working they were. It is therefore no surprise to me that in the private sector, on average, fewer sick days are taken. Nothing to do with anyone abusing the system, just the difference in the attitude of management towards the well-being of employees and clients.

@Dan F HA HA HA! You're kidding right.! Yes, that's what people in the private sector do, drag themselves in when they are deathly ill to show the boss how dedicated they are! Did you read the piece? Public sector employees take an average of 15.2 days a year sick leave/personal leave etc. Why? Because they can and they do.l know many pubic sector workers and they laugh about it and brah about it. Don't even try to pass off your "theory" as the truth. Abuse is abuse, call it what you want Public sector employees abuse it and EVERYBODY knows it. I would hazard a guess and say that you are working in the public sector now or retired.

@Dan F Oh, we didn't realize that the public sector workers were taking numerous sick days because they were being considerate of their fellow workers, I gues that's why they take 15.2 sick days a year beacuse they are so darn considerate, unlike the private sector who just doesn't care, and damn the co-workers, they are going to drag themselves in no matter what to impress management and show just how dedicated they are! Public Sector Good-Private Sector Bad! What a joke!

Very interesting how people will get so hot under the collar when they think someone is getting more than them. Why are so many people so angry maybe that is the question. Unions give people a living wage.

@happybevy People get hot under the collar because they are paying taxes for people to scam sick days, that they have far too many off to begin with, that the unions negotiated a deal for these people to cash out thier unused sick days, (which is a crock, you"re either sick or your not) and the taxpayers are picking up the tab for all of this Bevy. Unions have overstayed their welcome and over stepped their boundaries, and I will reiterate, they have no place in the public sector. The abuse in the public sector of sick days, personal days etc. is outrageous, did you not read the article? It's costing the taxpayers billions and we are fed up! Your sense of entitlement is typical union propaganda. Go work in the private sector and take all of your fake sick days, or cash them out at the end........nobody will question it. But as far as this happening on the taxpayers dime, it will be questioned and we taxpayers will fight. We are fed up with you ridiculous belief that you deserve more than the tax payers who have to sacrifice for you. Oh, by the way your Happybevy name says it all.

@Terry Hey Terry, yor comment is OLD, you've used it befor and no one bought your shit then? You are such a typical union asshole who uses bullshit rhetoric like this to try and make a case for yourself. Like it or not, unionized public sector workers who get these preposterous benefits, paid unused sick days, etc. are resented by people who are paying their freight. Yes, th eones who are costing us billions in unnecessary sick days are lazy slobs. How dare you call the taxpayers who bay your way bigots. You are just another thug with the unionized, sense of entitlement mentality. Hold on to your hat though, because most of us are fed up with the likes of you and the union and your tai e is coming'. The party cam't and won't last forever.
