ETFO Stands By Right To Strike

Posted By: Katie Franzios · 12/6/2012 3:29:00 PM

The elementary teachers union head is playing it cool after the Education Minister announced her intentions earlier in the day.

Sam Hammond is stressing teachers are within their rights to strike.

He underlines the union has been respectful since the beginning of strike talks, noting they didn't have to give at least 72-hours notice before they walk out.

Hammond says he wasn't surprised at anything the Education Minister said and notes he isn't concerned about the province ending the strikes.

He says the union will cross that bridge when they get to it.

Hammond says his focus right now is moving forward with talks with school boards and planned one-day strikes.

Can you imagine if a group of ordinary citizens had a way to hold education hostage like this until their demands were met? They'd be condemned as criminals in the media, tried to the full extent of the law, and be labelled as criminals and outcasts the rest of their lives. And rightfully so! What makes these so-called "teachers" any different?

If going on strike is more important to you than ensuring kids get an education, you don't deserve to call yourself a teacher. You're just a spineless union thug willing to hurt children to get what you want.

@Jack Can you imagine an employer in the private sector who is able to arbitrarily suspend legal rights and freedoms. They'd be tried to the full extent of the law-- at least the overwhelming majority of citizens would hope they would. Would you just stand back and let others trample on your rights. Of course you wouldnt.
