Toronto toy and food drives need more donations
As you do your last minute Christmas shopping, you're being reminded that toy and food drives around the city need your donations to help children in need.
Julia Silvestri with the Yonge St Mission says they were scrambling yesterday when families came in to pick up donations.
What they need most are gifts for teenagers 12 and up. She says that could include gift certificates, DVDs and CDs.
She says their food bank is also in need of more donations, especially turkeys and canned vegetables.
And the charity needs donations as soon as possible. They are handing out the last toys to families on Thursday, while the deadline for food is Friday.
Meanwhile, Rick Berenz, president of the Toronto Firefighters Toy Drive, says they are having their best year yet.
But he says that is thanks to corporate sponsors not citizens.
Berenz says citizen donations have just picked up the last week because people are finally in Christmas mode.
You can continue donating to the firefighter toy drive in the new year because they hand out toys all year to families who have lost everything in a fire.
