Part of Cabbagetown townhouse ceiling collapses

Posted By: Siobhan Morris · 1/3/2013 1:04:00 PM

This could be the kick in the pants you to fix that stubborn leak at home.

A 4ft x 4ft section of ceiling collapsed on a 56-year old man inside a Cabbagetown townhouse.

The man was hit by drywall &insulation.  The man's daughter called for help.  The man was checked over by EMS & doesn't look to be badly hurt.

Toronto Fire Captain Mike Strapko says the roof of the place on Prospect St near Wellesley St & E & Parliament St had been leaking for awhile.  He says the fluctuating temperatures the city has seen lately could've had something to do with it.

It must be a 'slow-news' day in Toronto, when this kind of incident is reported. Every winter I am involved with 2 - 5 such cases, as people think they can neglect routine maintenance of their roofs and attics. It's too bad this man was (slightly) injured, but this was a self-inflicted situation. There will likely be an insurance claim, when it should be refused; no wonder we pay high insurance premiums.

A few years ago, I was called to a house in Mississauga, where a 5' x 7' section of the kitchen ceiling had fallen - the result of poor attic conditions causing excessive condensation (water), to the point the drywall ceiling bowed and then gave way.
