Ont public sector managers get bonuses

Posted By: Siobhan Morris · 1/3/2013 1:08:00 PM

So much for that public sector wage freeze.

4700 Ontario bureaucrats got bonuses from the provincial government for the holidays with an average payout of $4500.  The total bill to the province is $21.5-million.

Because of a retroactive freeze on public sector salaries announced in September, without a lump sum top up, workers would've taken home less cash this year than last.  The freeze was based on 2010-11 T4s which included performance bonuses.

Speaking with Newstalk 1010's Jerry Agar, Progressive Conservative Finance Critic Peter Shurman calls the move "a bad joke".  Shurman adds "It's what the third day of the new year?  I want to shoot myself already".

Shurman points out with that with the province staring down a deficit, the government used over $21-millionthey don't have.

So they topped up their salaries with a "bonus" so they wouldn't take home less money because of the wage freeze. That is not what a bonus is - ir'a not your wages - it's extra for doing a great job. Did they all do a wonderful job so therefore deserve it? Not by what we can all see by the results of the government deficit and cutback in services. I think every taxpayer should get a bonus - send us all a bonus cheque for putting up with such deception.

And, don`t call it a wage freeze - because it wasn`t one!

This makes me want to poke a pencil in my eye. Bureaucrats will ALWAYS give themselves a raise, a bonus, a pat on the back - AT THE EXPENSE OF THE REST OF US. FIRE.THEM.ALL.

    Robin Hood in reverse

Rob from the working stiffs - give to the (now by comparison) rich! Dalton and his merry men and women will go down in Ontario history - as the bunch of money grabbing numpties - they are!

What an insult to hard-working Ontarians. Get rid of the whole bunch as soon as possible !

If you want to see how badly the taxpayer is being scammed look at http://www.thesunshinelist.com. I can't wait for this year's list where executives are getting a 0% pay increase! We need more transparency in government - or better yet just less government.

@John Soshtek When looking at Sunshine list keep in mind some ministries(Corrections) have been understaffed for almost 4 years. Most days/most jails run with not enough staff. I will be on Sunshine list this year but I worked 12-16 hour shifts12 out of 14 days for a year
