Olivia Chow diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt syndrome

Posted By: Newstalk 1010 · 1/4/2013 11:26:00 AM

Toronto NDP MP Olivia Chow says she's been diagnosed with a condition that could temporarily prevent her from making certain facial expressions.

Jack Layton's widow says she saw her doctor over the holidays after waking up with some discomfort on the left side of her face.

Chow says she was told she has Ramsay Hunt syndrome, which occurs when the shingles virus affects the facial nerve near the ear.

As a result, Chow says she is having trouble smiling, laughing and putting in her contact lens on that side.

But she stresses the condition in no way affects her work as a member of Parliament, adding people will ``just have to imagine that I am smiling.''

Shingles is caused by the chickenpox virus, which remains dormant in the body and can become active again. In addition to a painful rash, it can lead to long-term nerve pain.

In the case of Ramsay Hunt syndrome, it can also cause permanent facial muscle weakness and deafness.

"I am learning to be patient as it will take time for my left facial nerves to fully recover. It could take weeks, months or longer,'' Chow said in a statement Friday morning.

"Overcoming challenges and adversity is something I have always done. This is no different. While I may have some difficulty smiling for a while, I will continue to work hard and have fun.''

@Saratoga Yes, but not everyone is a potential candidate as Rob Ford's replacement, or a high-ranking member of Her Majesty's Loyal Opposition in the Canadian House of Commons.

@Townie It isn't life threatening and she isn't stoic and brave because she has a minor malady which may impede her ability to smile for awhile. I have to agree with Saratoga it isn't news, it is however Olivia Chow and God help us all if she replaces Rob Ford.
"Overcoming challenges and adversity is something I have always done. This is no different. While I may have some difficulty smiling for a while, I will continue to work hard and have fun.'' She is so full of herself.

@Stug Stug you are so predictable. Hate Rob Ford love Olivia and the rest of the government sucking "politicians". Tell us Stug, exactly what has Olivia Chow done for us other than put herself out there as a "caring activist" and that is a joke too. Really, this "diagnosis" does not warrant headlines. Sorry. And, yes, she is FULL OF HERSELF and so was her husband.

@paul you didn't answer the question Paul.
Anything else you say is really just irrelevant. Your comment was just plain immature at the end Paul. considering someone has an illness. no matter what political stripe i make no ill will comments towards anyone like their politics or not.
If you had common sense you would leave out the childless rhetoric and just say this does not warrant a headline.
      leave it at that.
go back to watching Sun news Paul with the rest of your ilk.

@Stug This is just to make her current again in the media," just in case'. Tell me, was it really necessary to refer to her as JAck Layton's widow? I think not, God knows everyone and their brother knows that. As Paul asked, what has she ever done for the city, the province besides living in subsidized housing and telling us how her mother was extra irritated the first day of privatized garbage pick up because they were 1/2 an hour late. Some folks think she is relevant and a lot of us don't. She is a great little actress with really nothing to say.

@Stug Okay Stug, you intellectual, Globe and Mail, Star reader you. And speaking of childish rhetoric, WOW that is the kettle calling the pot black. I have ready many of your comments, and they are REALLY childish, crackhead, half breed jus to recall a few. And yes she is so full of herself. You haven't answered my question either, tell us, what has she ecer done or accomplished besides being lucky enough to win her ridings, that is her accomplishment. You are one hell of a hypocrite.

@Stug Hey Stug. That's because she has no accomplishments to toot her own horn about. For such a forward thinking activist she hasn't amde any changes to the world.
