The man accused in the New  Year's Day hit and run was back in court on Monday.

A 7-year-old boy was killed when his family van was rear-ended by a Hummer on Hwy 401. The driver of the Hummer took off.

30-year-old Jose Renteria was arrested by the OPP on Friday near Cobourg. He has been charged with dangerous driving causing death, criminal negligence causing death and failing to remain at the scene of an accident.

Renteria made a brief court appearance on Monday. He stood behind the glass of the prisoner box  wearing jeans and a vest.

He will stay in police custody until a special bail hearing, expected to take place later this week.
