UPDATE: List of School Boards that have opened their elementary schools

Posted By: Michelle Rosa · 1/11/2013 6:45:00 AM

A scramble this morning for public elementary schools across Ontario, as well as teachers and parents.

The Ontario Labour Relations Board ruled that any job action taken by teachers on Friday, would be ruled "unlawful". That announcement came down just before 4 a.m. on Friday after 13 hours of discussions.
Only 30 minutes later, word came from ETFO president Sam Hammond that, all teachers and staff were urged to go to work on Friday, as long as their schools were open.

Elementary schools in these boards are open on Friday:

- Toronto District School Board, but no transportation
- York Region District School Board, but no transportation
- Peel District School Board
- Durham District School Board
- Halton Region School Board
- Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board
- Waterloo Region District School Board
- Grand Erie School Board
- Niagara District School Board
- Upper Grand District School Board
- Bluewater District School Board
- Simcoe County District School Board
- Kawartha Pine Ridge District School Board

Just so you (and any readers) are aware, we just received a phone call from the Halton School Board saying that elementary schools *ARE* open today.

Yes, The schools in Halton are open. What's amazing is that they sent automated calls to the parents at 7:45 am.

Our school bus arrives at 7:50 am only 5 minutes later. No one was there. And the school refused to have the buses turn around (this buses made only 2 stops before arriving to the school). Our home school is a good distance away.

I've lost any sympathy I may have for these selfish "educators" and their unreasonable unions.

We live in Simcoe County. Yep schools are open but buses are cancelled! For all the schools where attendance is 2/3 of bused in students, it effectively turns into a snow day. Oh, the teachers may have to show up, however not all of them will and for the children who do make it to school, it will be a 'no curriculum' day.

Why would the SCDSB not require the contracted bus companies to go into today as a regular work day - rather, their web site says that buses are cancelled because of the short notice between the 4:00am decision and the morning work schedule. Rubbish! We are allowing the children (unions/teachers) to run the daycare (gov't/taxpayer)!

So the unions did what they set out to do... disrupt the entire system. That we don't have a choice as to how and by whom our children educated is nothing less than stripping me of my fundamental right (yes teachers / unions - education is fundamental right to all Canadians as per the Charter) to have my child taught TODAY! Pay structure (sick days blah blah blah) is not a fundamental right! Even negotiating a pay structure is not a fundamental right - my employer says, "This is what I am offering" and then I say "Okay" or I look elswhere for a job.

It is time - good bye unions!

@Glenn Glenn, you have many, many people sharing your opinion. Crazy!

Our Upper Grand District School Board website couldn't even tell it like it was this A.M. They posted the bus cancellations were due to inclement weather. ( periods of rain today - high of 7degrees ) And again, the secondary panel students have now also been affected in that the busses are cancelled, therefore there is no curriculum, just as in the Simcoe Board.

Even though our secondary panel ratified back in November, and they are not supposed to be affected, we were all affected this morning.

This is wrong on so many levels.

If the parents across this province had to be on pins and needles, wondering how the discussions would go last night , why did the bus companies also not need to have a contingency plan?

It is a good question to ask ! Do the bus companies not have an email distribution system for their drivers ? Honestly. Ridiculous! Another group of people who are getting paid for not doing a thing today.

OK - here is a different twist :) I live in the Upper Grand District School Board. Not many know this, but our teachers in the secondary panel ratified back beginning of November. Our high schools in the UGDSB have been operating with extra curricular, etc. It is status quo. So - you would think that in the secondary school panel, it would be business as usual today. When the strike happened before Christmas, surprise - we DID have transportation. It was business as usual. Yet today - you got it. Busses got cancelled for the secondary panel also. HUH? I told my husband to drive careful in the rain today :)

Fines to greedy teachers and their unions should be leveled at them when they disrupt the system like they did today instead of just when they do illegal activity.
After all, if you are at the airport and yell "bomb", then you will be severely punished regardless of whether you have a bomb or not. The bottom line is that today is shot for many students and parents of Ontario and someone needs to pay for that.

@Sandy Today is the beginning of the end for teachers, unions and their stunts. People have had enough and now the government has to and will stand up to them. Our votes far outweight their votes. The Unios are so over.

I have also lost respect for our educators. Is this helping their cause?
In the end this hurts our childern, which they have seemed to forgotten about why they got into teaching.
I wish I had the option to strike with pay whenever I felt like it.
Very dissapointed. 7:45am I called my school in Brampton and no answer.
We got a letter home yesterday saying no school and my boys teachers told them no school today.

My kids' teachers are at school and ready to teach. I think the anger towards teachers is understandable but misdirected. Their union is doing a lousy job at communicating not only wih parents but their own membership as well. These teachers cannot legally opt out of this union, so what are they supposed to do?
The bigger picture here is that Bill 115 states within it it will supersede our Canadian Human Rights Bill. This union has NOT effectively educated the public nor their own members on what's really at stake! May ETFO win in court, where it should be handled.
Please realize the teachers are between a rock and a hard place. And no, I am not a teacher.

@Char The Unions certainly are the biggest problem, but a huge percentage of the teachers relished this and had a lot of fun doing it in back in December. Our Human Rights are not going to be taken away from us, the only thing that will be taken away, hopefully, are the teacehr's banked sick days, this and other issues concerning the teachers salaries, perks etc are really what this is all about. Now maybe the taxpaying public who are getting screwed by these people can put a little money aside for themselves. BTW read some of the comments from teachers on her about "psychotic kids and their loser parents" and many other derogatory remarks from "caring teachers who only do this for the love of childre". Give us all a break. Respect for teachers right now is at an all time low.

      @Char Hi Char:

Here's what you fail to realize.

The government is telling us there is no money to be paid to these "educators". While the union has taken a very radical approach to this pay freeze under the guise of "we're only doing whats best for your kids", we (the parents, who also happen to be tax payers) are left in a comprising position, and our children are caught in the cross fire.

The only people that are caught between a "rock in a hard place" are the children.

At the end of the day teachers are still paid their expected salaries even though their actions this school year leave much to be desired. The tax payers are still expected to pay taxes into an educational system that has failed to follow through on its mandate to our children. And it's the children who suffer!, no clubs, no sports, less than adequate report cards and teachers who are telling our children just how uncommitted they really are.

      Here's a thought!

How about we put the teacher to the test of "taking Action" during their coveted summer vacation. That would be a true testimony to their commitment to our children and their education, let them give up their free time for the good of the province.
