Hoskins To Stay In Race

Posted By: Katie Franzios · 1/14/2013 4:07:00 PM

Now that the dust has settled from this weekend with how many Liberal delegates are supporting which candidate, a surprise to most is that St. Paul's MPP Eric Hoskins was last in support, with just a few dozen more nods than independent delegates.

And with Glen Murray dropping out due to lack of support last week, rumours are swirling.

In an exclusive interview with Newstalk 1010 Hoskins says he's staying in the race. He says he obviously wishes the numbers were a little stronger but underlines he wants to be part of the party's renewal process.

Hoskins spoke of how he wants to bring his delegates - no matter what number - to the convention floor. but he underlines he does have support from a list of former and current MPPs and MPs. They weren't counted in this weekend's delegate process.

As for if there is any lobbying or talk about switching support on the convention floor, he says its always good to keep the lines of communication between candidates open so he could have a better understanding of what others believe in.

The Ontario Liberal Leadership Convention takes place on the last weekend of January. You'll be able to listen to indepth coverage right here on Newstalk 1010.

Results from weekend:

Candidate - Delegates - Percentage

Sandra Pupatello - 504 - 27.44

Kathleen Wynne - 463 - 25.20

Gerard Kennedy - 257 - 13.99

Harinder Takhar - 244 - 13.58

Charles Sousa - 198 - 10.78

Eric Hoskins - 104 - 5.77

Independent - 67 - 3.65

It was a nice try, but I can't see this guy as our next Premier. He's too green, and I don't mean environmentally friendly. I'm sure he's that! I can understand he wants to participate in the drama of walking across the floor and giving his support to Pupatello or Wynne. Nice gesture.

Silver spoon life. Never had to balance a budget or worry about making ends meet. A nod for his earlier volunteerism - but it was funded by others. Like Gerard Kennedy, he thinks he is 'entitled' to some sort of elected job and will keep running until he convinces enough. No real qualifications.

The major King or Queen makers here are Takhar and Sousa. Hoskins will have no real impact in comparison. Takhar's and Sousa's supporters will take marching orders for the most part ... The Hoskins supporters are merely parking their votes for the next round. All of this is being said in the full knowledge that I supported Mike Harris once (for about a minute).
