UPDATE: Man Arrested for Murder, Was Already On Bail

Posted By: Dave Bradley · 1/21/2013 6:55:00 PM

The man charged in the death of a 27 year old woman in Etobicoke on the weekend, was already out on bail.

Toronto Police held a press conference on Monday, updating their investigation into the city's 3rd murder of 2013.

30 year old Emmanuel Owusu-Ansah was arrested in Mississauga on Saturday and charged with first degree murder.

Detective Sgt Brian Borg from Toronto Police says he was already on bail, facing 8 charges including assault with a weapon, and uttering death threats.

Borg went on to confirm that those charges related to the same victim as this murder.

Toronto police has identified the victim as 27-year-old Bridget Takyi.

Police say it was a very violent incident, with the woman first stabbed to death and then her body set on fire.

One of the conditions of Owusu-Ansah's bail was that he remained under house arrest, a condition he allegedly broke.

Police say it was around 7 o'clock on Saturday morning that officers were called to an area around Weston Road and Eglinton for reports of trouble.

Owusu-Ansah was arrested around 9:45 in the Hurontario and Eglinton area of Mississauga.

Detective Sgt Borg says while they do have a person in custody, the investigation is far from over.

He says a number of things were found at the murder scene, and they've released photos in hopes someone has more information.

So, how many of these incidents need to happen before something actually functional is done about this whole bail and house arrest thing? Last summer it was the shooter in the Eaton Center, and now this waste of flesh, and how many others have been able to do the same thing?

Lack of space in prison? I am curious as to how many people are in prison for non violent charges, like possession or selling of pot. Would make more sense letting those guys out on house arrest than the guy charged with assault with a weapon and uttering death threats.

I'm no expert though, and I don't have a real answer for this issue, but good lord can we not keep violent offenders locked up or at least expedited through the legal system so their court dates are quicker and they don't need to be let out on bail? I am not saying rush them through the trial, just get to the damn trial quicker!

@Brandon I agree with you Brandon. I don't know what it is going to take either. It's like a revolving door and there are just too many lawyers willing to get these people off at any expense even knowing that they are probably guilty. I have seen this miscarriage of justice first hand and it is really, really frustrating and disheartening. I think maybe if something happened to a loved one of one of the powers that be maybe things would change, although I wouldn't want that to happen, I wouldn't want it to happen to anyone. But, something clealry has to change and soon.

The criminal justice system is completely disfunctional. It is as responsible as the accused.

I find it totally idiotic that the Canadian court system has become the white elephant in the room! What ever happened to the fact that if you commit a crime, then the bottom line is you have to serve out your sentence, period, end of story! The war on drunk driving has seemed to cut the idiots chances of getting away with it so why are the lawmakers not adhering to the same rules you installed for drivers whom imbide? Seems kind of dumb that JUDGE GETS SUCKED INTO BELIEVING that somehow someway the accused will be okay as long as we let them walk freely among us! Nonsense, lock them up, deport them, or gas them! Harsh... yes but enough is enough!

Maybe if the court systems actually worked...and house arrest meant handcuffing someone to the house (but in Canada we know its not humaine to do that).

How many times will repeat offenders get house arrest???

    Lock-up...throw away the key etc...

Or maybe capital punishment should come back. Eye for an eye in my opinion...or in this case maybe the accused be doused with gas, lit and let die the same way (screw the stabbing part).

Heck, let the family of the young woman light the match if they wish to avenge their MURDER.

    Like what the hell is wrong with our system or this picture;

he was already on bail, facing 8 charges including assault with a weapon, and uttering death threats.

Like how the hell was he released on BAIL???? on HOUSE ARREST??? Are you kidding me?

They should have left his ass in jail and then ***maybe*** this terrible death wouldn't have happened!

May her soul rest in peace and be with her 2 kids as they struggle with the death of their mother!
