Province to Help Ontarians Butt Out

Posted By: Amber Gero · 1/23/2013 10:00:00 AM

The province has announced two new initiatives aimed at helping Ontarians butt out.

Health Minister Deb Mathews made the announcement Wednesday at the Regent Park Community Health Centre in recognition of National Non-Smoking week.

The province already has 41 Community Health Centres that will now be providing over-the-counter nicotine cessation aids and counselling at no cost.

The province will be spending $810-thousand to partner with select workplaces through 11 public health units to reduce smoking among workers in the industrial and service sectors.

The province will also be spending $2-million to help patients at hospitals quit smoking as well.

The announcement came on "Weedless Wednesday".

I thought this government was "closed" for the winter. This is just another "feel good" initiative to justify the number of employees on the public payroll. All they need to do is subsidize the cessation and replacement aids out there. Councellors - why do they think everything can get solved if you talk about it.

@KarenW_5 Where can I sign up to be a counsellor? I'd be good at it and I am sure the pay is great! You're right though Karen, quitting smoking doesn't take counselling it takes will power and desire.
