Halton Officer Helps Deliver Baby on the Side of the Road

A Milton couple and their newborn daughter are doing well in hospital after a Halton police officer helped them deliver the baby on the side of the road.

At approximately 3:32 a.m., Thursday, Halton Police were called to help the expectant couple on the shoulder of Highway 401 just east of Highway 25.

Sgt. Ryan Snow who was nearing the end of his shift arrived at the scene a few minutes later to assist the couple in the midst of heavy traffic and a -18 windchill.

Snow, who was less than a minute away from the scene, arrived to find the 32-year-old mother sprawled on the ground between the couple's vehicle and a guardrail. Snow says she was going into heavy labour while her husband was sitting at her feet, talking frantically to paramedics on his phone.

Snow said the child was born within seconds and that he used a piece of crime scene tape to tie off the umbilical cord, because a clamp wasn't available.

Both mother and daughter were taken to Milton District Hospital by ambulance as a precaution.

This is the second child for the couple.
