Wynne wins Ontario Liberal leadership
Kathleen Wynne is Ontario's new premier.
The Don Valley West MPP beat out ex-cabinet minister Sandra Pupatello on the 3rd ballot of voting at the Liberal leadership convention at the Old Maple Leaf Gardens.
Wynne becomes not only Ontario's 1st female premier, but also its 1st openly gay leader.
She addressed her sexuality in her speech to delegates Saturday: “I don’t believe the people of Ontario judge their leaders on the basis of race, colour or sexual orientation, they judge us on our merits.”
The 59-year-old has served in the McGuinty cabinet as Minister of Education, Transportation, Municipal Affairs & Housing, & Aboriginal Affairs.
Wynne has vowed to recall the lesgislature February 19th.
The Harvard-trained mediator is anxious to mend fences with teachers unions, angry at having contracts forced on them under the McGuinty administration.
