Happy Friday: GO fares go up today

Posted By: James Moore · 2/1/2013 2:42:00 AM

Your commute gets a little more expensive on Friday morning.

Single-ride fares for GO trains and buses are going up across the board.

The cost of paper tickets for adults, children, seniors, groups, and students is affected.

For example, as of February 1st, adults pay anywhere from 35 to 55 cents more per fare, depending on the distance travelled:

A 35 cent increase on current fares between $4.50 and $5.80

A 45 cent increase on current fares between $5.81 and $7.35

A 55 cent increase on current fares greater than $7.35.

Riders can ease the pain by switching to the swipe-and-go PRESTO card to pay fares.

Loyalty discounts, available only on the PRESTO system, are going up to help offset the fare increase and encourage more customers to use it.

GO says it will invest the additional revenue back into the transit system to improve parking facilities and service schedules.

The decision to increase fares was made at a Metrolinx board meeting last December.
