Allegations of price fixing by Toronto concrete contractors

Posted By: Newstalk 1010 · 2/1/2013 5:53:00 AM

There are allegations of a price fixing conspiracy in the Greater Toronto Area building industry that may have inflated the cost of your home.

The Toronto Star has legal documents showing the federal Competition Bureau is investigating the Residential Low Rise Forming Contractors Association, which represents most large concrete contractors in the GTA and at least 3 concrete forming companies.  Two of them are in Woodbridge and another is in Vaughan.

Nothing has been proven in court but allgations have been made that the organization and these companies colluded to fix the price of building the concrete foundations of homes for the past 15 years.

The documents also accuse the association of forming an agreement amongst its members that contractors would not compete for work.

No big surprise. In any heavily unionized environment, ethics are going to be a rare-to-nonexistent commodity.
