*UPDATE* NDP Wants Auto Insurance Rates Dropped By 15%

Posted By: Newstalk 1010 · 2/4/2013 11:49:00 AM

Ontario's New Democrats want the government to order auto insurance companies to cut their rates by 15 per cent within
one year.

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath says the government introduced changes in 2010 that ``dramatically'' lowered benefits for drivers while also cutting statutory benefit pay outs in half for insurance companies.

However, Horwath says premiums still jumped by an average of five per cent in 2011, so she wants the provincial regulator to mandate a cut in rates.

She says if the industry is not willing to pass along savings from the changes, then the government should force them to do it.

But the Insurance Brokers of Ontario says they'd love to drop rates by 15%, but they can't. They claim insurance fraud is rampant and costing them millions.

Presiden of the Association Debbie Thompson says instead of forcing them to cut rates, the government and opposition should work together in implementing the recomendations of a report released last November.

Those recomendations include regulating health clinics and the towing industry.

Horwath also wants a five-day guarantee for seniors to get home care, part of a growing list of NDP demands for premier-elect
Kathleen Wynne.

Last week the NDP called on Wynne to close $1.3 billion in corporate tax loopholes and spend nearly $200 million over two years on creating jobs for youth.

Horwath says all her suggestions do not have to be in the upcoming budget, but adds they are things that should be dealt with in the spring session of the legislature.

Politticians want to play around with public emotions. They will come in with big promises and once they are elected, the same politicians come up with flimsy defence explaining why they did not fulfill their election promises. ONTARIANS and CANADIANS need to realize and understand that the promises made by these politicians are ultimately paid for by the law abiding tax payers. In this case, the insurance industry cartel is not stupid to forgo their lucrative profits just because a politician made the promise. We have seen this during Mcguinty's tenure and we ended up paying higher rates after a few years.
Time to wake up and speak up guys.

How many billions of tax payers money were wasted by the Liberals in power? no how many? and now they cutting home care hours to 45 , 30 and often 15 minutes per visit. Why make a home care a scape goat? Personal Support Workers do not have enough money to survive and many living below poverty line. Who else in Ontario working for minutes not per hour? Shame the big time.

@Agatha Agatha maybe on the other hand vote for the conservatives in the next election. i think i read someplace they wanted to increase the home care hours back and increase the wages and benefits and sick days of personal support workers. the conservatives feel the support workers have been neglected for far to long. that should solve your issue!!!

I agree with her request however we all know that any money saved on insurance would be lost 1000 fold by electing an NDP gov't so I'd rather suffer with higher insurance premiums than the alternative of suffering at the hands of the ndp. fiberals are no better.

@proton I wanted to do a quick check, because I actually heard somewhere that NDP was pretty decent with budgets.

"Of the 52 years the NDP has formed governments in Canada since 1980, they’ve run balanced budgets for exactly half of those years and deficits the other half. This is a better record than both the Conservatives (balanced budgets 37% of years in government) and the Liberals (only 27%), as well as both Social Credit and PQ governments."

You can check the site I found this on. Whether you want to believe it or not is up to you.

My auto insurance just went up 25%. No claims, no accidents, nothing except crime that was committed at the far end of the vast "region" where I live which happens to include a bad neighbourhood over 10km away. Do I believe the government can legislate insurance rates? HELL NO. Andrea Horwath lives in a fantasyland. In the real world insurance companies and the government are peanut butter and jam.

IMO the liberals are stupid, incompetent, as well as corrupt - IE Gas Plant Project Vapour. The stupid liberals agreed with the insurance companies to reduce our coverage but the stupids did not get a GUARANTEE that this would result in lower fees. Now the insurance companies are able to take advantage of us, all thanks to the stupid liberals. Canadian insurance rates suck the life out people because there is a limit to what people can pay for insurance and still pay for food, mortgages, utilities, etc.

I've been driving for 18 years I have 2 minor tickets on my record and I've NEVER put in a claim but my rates keep going up I drive a van and cause I have 2 minor tickets these insurance companies want me to pay 5000 a year but do these blood sucking insurance companies realize that I have other bills to pay including raising a family. Insurance companies are the biggest organized crime out there and the goverment needs to step in do something about it it's getting frustrating that I can't afford to put my child in extra activities cause I have to pay car insurance so I can go to work. Insurance rates should be based on the individual person. If someone puts I a lot of claims then there insurance should go up not mine.
