*UPDATE* NDP Wants Auto Insurance Rates Dropped By 15%

Posted By: Newstalk 1010 · 2/4/2013 11:49:00 AM

Ontario's New Democrats want the government to order auto insurance companies to cut their rates by 15 per cent within
one year.

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath says the government introduced changes in 2010 that ``dramatically'' lowered benefits for drivers while also cutting statutory benefit pay outs in half for insurance companies.

However, Horwath says premiums still jumped by an average of five per cent in 2011, so she wants the provincial regulator to mandate a cut in rates.

She says if the industry is not willing to pass along savings from the changes, then the government should force them to do it.

But the Insurance Brokers of Ontario says they'd love to drop rates by 15%, but they can't. They claim insurance fraud is rampant and costing them millions.

Presiden of the Association Debbie Thompson says instead of forcing them to cut rates, the government and opposition should work together in implementing the recomendations of a report released last November.

Those recomendations include regulating health clinics and the towing industry.

Horwath also wants a five-day guarantee for seniors to get home care, part of a growing list of NDP demands for premier-elect
Kathleen Wynne.

Last week the NDP called on Wynne to close $1.3 billion in corporate tax loopholes and spend nearly $200 million over two years on creating jobs for youth.

Horwath says all her suggestions do not have to be in the upcoming budget, but adds they are things that should be dealt with in the spring session of the legislature.

How many billions of tax payers money were wasted by the Liberals in power? no how many? and now they cutting home care hours to 45 , 30 and often 15 minutes per visit. Why make a home care a scape goat? Personal Support Workers do not have enough money to survive and many living below poverty line. Who else in Ontario working for minutes not per hour? Shame the big time.

@Agatha Agatha maybe on the other hand vote for the conservatives in the next election. i think i read someplace they wanted to increase the home care hours back and increase the wages and benefits and sick days of personal support workers. the conservatives feel the support workers have been neglected for far to long. that should solve your issue!!!
