*UPDATE* NDP Wants Auto Insurance Rates Dropped By 15%

Posted By: Newstalk 1010 · 2/4/2013 11:49:00 AM

Ontario's New Democrats want the government to order auto insurance companies to cut their rates by 15 per cent within
one year.

NDP Leader Andrea Horwath says the government introduced changes in 2010 that ``dramatically'' lowered benefits for drivers while also cutting statutory benefit pay outs in half for insurance companies.

However, Horwath says premiums still jumped by an average of five per cent in 2011, so she wants the provincial regulator to mandate a cut in rates.

She says if the industry is not willing to pass along savings from the changes, then the government should force them to do it.

But the Insurance Brokers of Ontario says they'd love to drop rates by 15%, but they can't. They claim insurance fraud is rampant and costing them millions.

Presiden of the Association Debbie Thompson says instead of forcing them to cut rates, the government and opposition should work together in implementing the recomendations of a report released last November.

Those recomendations include regulating health clinics and the towing industry.

Horwath also wants a five-day guarantee for seniors to get home care, part of a growing list of NDP demands for premier-elect
Kathleen Wynne.

Last week the NDP called on Wynne to close $1.3 billion in corporate tax loopholes and spend nearly $200 million over two years on creating jobs for youth.

Horwath says all her suggestions do not have to be in the upcoming budget, but adds they are things that should be dealt with in the spring session of the legislature.

I agree with her request however we all know that any money saved on insurance would be lost 1000 fold by electing an NDP gov't so I'd rather suffer with higher insurance premiums than the alternative of suffering at the hands of the ndp. fiberals are no better.

@proton I wanted to do a quick check, because I actually heard somewhere that NDP was pretty decent with budgets.

"Of the 52 years the NDP has formed governments in Canada since 1980, they’ve run balanced budgets for exactly half of those years and deficits the other half. This is a better record than both the Conservatives (balanced budgets 37% of years in government) and the Liberals (only 27%), as well as both Social Credit and PQ governments."

You can check the site I found this on. Whether you want to believe it or not is up to you.
