*UPDATE* Senator Brazeau Kicked Out Of Conservative Caucus

Posted By: Dave Bradley · 2/7/2013 2:20:00 PM

Controversial and outspoken Sen. Patrick Brazeau has been kicked out of the Conservative caucus amid media reports that
he was arrested Thursday following a domestic disturbance at his home.

The entire Senate caucus was notified of the decision shortly after noon, said Lorraine Rochon, a staff member in his office.

``The Conservative Senate caucus has been advised by Sen. LeBreton's office that Sen. Brazeau has been removed from caucus effective immediately,'' Rochon said.

Conservative Senate Majority Leader Marjory LeBreton would not delve into the details.

``In light of the serious nature of the events reported today, Senator Brazeau has been removed from the Conservative Caucus,'' she said in a statement.

``As this is a legal matter, I cannot comment further.''

Gatineau police confirmed they arrested a man Thursday morning at a home in Gatineau on a matter related to domestic violence, but they did not release a name. They said the investigation was ongoing.

Brazeau's office did not immediately confirm reports that the senator had been arrested. Outside his home, which was cordoned off by red police tape, a police cruiser was seen parked in the driveway.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper made the decision after learning of the allegations, his office said in a statement. ``The prime
minister was appalled and saddened when he heard the allegations and took immediate action.''

Brazeau will continue to sit as an independent.

He is also among the senators under scrutiny for claiming housing allowances on the grounds their primary residence far from Ottawa, while in reality they spent most of the time in or near the nation's capital.

Controversy has dogged Brazeau, the youngest of Canada's 105 senators, since his appointment to the red chamber in December 2008.

He was criticized initially for his intention to serve as a senator while remaining national chief of the Congress of Aboriginal
Peoples.

He eventually resigned from CAP in January 2009 after news broke that a CAP employee had filed a sexual harassment complaint against him with Ontario's human rights tribunal.

He was also linked to allegations of CAP misspending of federal funds that were supposed to pay for aboriginal health programs.

Conservatives argued, at the time, that the misspending happened before Brazeau took over as congress chief.

Over the years, reports have surfaced repeatedly of Brazeau being in arrears on child support payments.

He made the biggest headlines last March when he fought a charity boxing match against Liberal MP Justin Trudeau, now front-runner for the federal Liberal leadership.

Although bigger, heavier and allegedly more experienced in boxing than Trudeau, Brazeau, a former member of the Canadian Forces and a black belt in karate, lost the match.

More recently, Brazeau has come under fire for allegedly claiming his father's home as his primary residence in order to receive a Senate housing allowance. He's also alleged to have used his former father-in-law's address on a Quebec reserve to claim an aboriginal income tax exemption.

    1. The "Harper" says he doesn't believe in an appointed senate.
    2. The "Harper" changes his "mind"
    3. The "Harper" has his appointee very carefully vetted first:

    Let's see the results for this appointee over a mere 4 years (so far)...
    1. potentially fraudulent housing allowance claims;
    2. double-dipping as senator and "big chief"
    3. investigation into the misspending of federal funds;
    4. non-payment of child support;
    5. income tax fraud allegations.

    Another great example of the trust we can put into the "One-Man-Harper-Band"

      @Only Common Sense if you actually bothered to read what's going on Harper keeps appointing members to the Senate in order to obtain a majority so he can have them elected vs appointed, and possible abolish the senate.

      try educating yourself before posting

      @proton And that bit of false hope on your part changes the "extremely thorough" vetting done by the Harper how?
      Try to understand the post before you incorrectly comment on it.

      @Only Common Sense It's hard to take anyone seriously who "likes" the drivel that Carol Ann posted.

      @Jason Your assumption of my purportedly liking... "the drivel that Carol Ann posted" ... is every bit as incorrect as Proton's reply to me was off topic.
      But please feel free to continue posting ... comic relief is always welcome.

      @Only Common Sense Comic relief is always welcome.......and I must say that I am actually relieved to know that you didn't like that drivel, you seem far too bright for that.

      @Only Common Sense You forgot to include #6 sexual assault allegation in 2009 and #7 current domestic violence & sexual assault charges.

      Just how much FRAUD does a a Dishonourable Senator in Canada have to commit before he's FIRED, PROSECUTED & IMPRISONED just like any other common criminal? This deadbeat doesn't deserve the title OR the inflated salary, expense account & gold plated pension he is handed. WTH??? The whole Senate is just a colossal waste of Canadian tax dollars. Enough already!!!

      @ctwr9-11 Send your comments to the lying, duplicitous, mendacious, double-dealing hypocrite who gave him the position (despite stating that he would never appoint anyone to the Senate) in the first place ... "The-One-Man-Harper Band"

      @proton Speaking of educating oneself ... the Harper has had a 2/3 majority in the upper chamber for quite some time ...
      where's the movement fro an elected senate now?
      Never mind ... the Harper proves once more that he can't be trusted to do what he muses about doing.

      @Only Common Sense They are BOTH guilty but for different reasons. Brazeau's actions are his own responsibility. Harper's gov't is just as irresponsible as the previous rat bag administration of the Liberals. The only MP I trust today is the Green Party leader Elizabeth May who actually tells the truth, walks her talk, has a pragmatic, sustainable vision for Canada's future and most important, owes NO political favours to anyone.
    13. ctwr9-11 posted on 02/09/2013 01:47 PM
      @Only Common Sense I can't disagree with you on that. I am disillusioned with all three of the "main" political parties and believe it would benefit Canadians substantially to elect more Greens to right a lot of egregious wrongs. We need to change/sustain the economy, energy, environment, education, health care, taxation, criminal & social justice, trade, foreign affairs, military & other portfolios But all others have left a string of broken promises, committing huge waste & fraud against Canadians for too long.

      @ctwr9-11 her vision would destroy Canada economically. It sounds nice, fuzzy and warm, but it would kill us economically, then where would Canada be? Look around the world, Greece, Spain, Portugal, etc.

      @proton I'll be one of the happy people in this country if he actually does what you claim. Unfortunately, the Harper has a very poor record of keeping his word (ask Preston Manning about the Harper knife job done on him in the leadership days).

      To put it more succinctly, the Harper has been eclipsed only by "Lyin' Brian" in double-dealing.

      The Harper-One-Man-Band will have to do it soon ... the Harper is getting very close to walking away with his batch of American directorships ... just like his mentor, Brian.

      You stay tuned as well.

      @proton Absolutely correct !!

      @proton If you elect people of Brazeau's calibre, then what makes you think these people will vote against their own interests?

      If you think that these Conservative senators will all of a sudden be ethical, then you'll be waiting a while.

      He appointed senators to gain control of the house, end of line. He did not appoint members to get the votes, as he still doesn't really have them.

      @Only Common Sense try reading your own posting first, which is what i was replying to. I've copied it below as you seem to have forgotten what you posted

      1. The "Harper" says he doesn't believe in an appointed senate.
      2. The "Harper" changes his "mind"

      You might consider "reading" before replying

      @proton My sincere apologies, proton.
      I have been noticing a thread of commonality in die-hard "CON"servative posts from you of late... that being a lack of coherence tied in with your blind faith in almost all things Harper.
      Next time around I'll try to dumb things down a bit for you.
      That will be my attempt to help you avoid your non-sequiturs.

      What part of the irony in "3. The "Harper" has his appointee very carefully vetted first" did you not grasp?
