Mayor Ford hints phase-out of land transfer tax is at hand

Posted By: James Moore · 2/10/2013 5:39:00 PM

Rob Ford says the first steps in potentially dismantling Toronto's land transfer tax are coming sooner than later.

Just days after saying he wants to slash the tax by 10 percent in the 2014 budget, the mayor hinted that wheels are already in motion.

"We're going to try to get 10 percent of (the land transfer tax) coming up in the next few months, we're going to see if we can start knocking it off, bit by bit," Ford says.

Speaking on Sunday's edition of NEWSTALK 1010's The City, Ford admitted the tax brings 'a lot of revenue' into city coffers but is adamant that it's days are numbered.

"We're the only municipality that has this tax.  Its a double-tax and I don't think its fair, I campaigned to get rid of it."

Ford did not say how long he expects it might take to eventually do away with the land transfer tax completely.

The mayor has talked about phasing out the tax since he was elected in 2010 but has not made any headway.  He campaigned on abolishing it by the time his term ends in 2014.

Toronto's land transfer tax brought in $336 million dollars last year.

It is tacked on to the cost of purchasing a home, in addition to a provincial land transfer tax.

@Joe Smith and i supposed you'd like us all to be taxed to death, with taxes that no other jurisdiction has, in order to allow councillors to increase their waste of our tax resources.

I'm sure every homeowner that's paid it agrees with you. There's already a provincial land transfer tax in place. I suppose the forced union wages the city gave away even if a contractor was non-union was a "gift tax". Overpaying for subway cars to benefit a Canadian union was a "transportation tax".

Pffft.. try to reduce10%? please...! if this mayor had stones which he doesn't or can't find them it would be gone 100% by now. this dope keeps on bad mouthing the previous mayor for bringing it in but notice the language. he likes the money! plain and simple! the city needs it. this gravy aint going anywhere folks! if he does get it by council which he won't services will be reduced 15% someplace else.

Ford says it brings in a lot of revenue but it has to go!! duhhhh! Yeah...! the city just hates revenue to pay for services WE ALL USE!!.
It's a good tax, it effected me recently. i have no issues. we want a thriving city it costs folks!!

As taxes go the land transfer tax is an intelligent one. Primarily it holds down speculation and flipping of properties. For real homeowners its a small beer in the overall scheme of things. It certianly has not hurt the value or ability of Toronto residents to sell homes.
Toronto needs a billion dollar a years forever to fund transit, and Ford wants to cut the most painless tax on the books.

Ford specializes in catch 22 arguments. We can not have a road tax because we have no road tax,and we can not have transit because we have no funding. I will give you nothing squared.

How I wish he had concluded this part and announced it when it's been decided on. This 'noise' will backfire on him 'again' if/when he doesn't deliver then he'll say 'we tried" - again. Given his history, I'd rather that he announces it when it's done and not just noise. The city waits for what can be done fully..not half.

I like the plan of putting half the cut into transit. Maybe look at a 10% reduction to the home purchaser, but of the remaining 90%, 10% would be dedicated to transit (i.e. only 80% would go to general revenues). He looks good to the Right by reducing the tax and he looks good to the Left that he is creating funds for transit.
