Police shoot coyote seen roaming Cabbagetown

Posted By: Michelle Rosa · 2/12/2013 6:26:00 AM

Residents of Cabbagetown can rest a little easier.

A coyote or a mix-breed coyote/wolf that had wandered into the Carlton and Parliament Street area Sunday evening. Apparently, it came back Monday night and that's when police shot and killed the animal.

They tried to surround the coyote, but say it became aggressive.

Toronto police say, "officers tried to get the coyote back into the ravine, however that failed, at which time, officers had to discharge their firearms and destroy the animal for the safety of the public."

Police are advising Torontonians to be careful and vigilant. Coyotes don't normally attack humans but they urge you not to leave young children unsupervised and if you happen to be confronted by a coyote, the best way to defend yourself is to wave your arms, make loud noises and throw objects at them. Slowly back away from the animal if those measures don't work.

Just watched a video of the police officers shooting this coyote on breakfast television. The coyote was trying to run away but was surrounded, it wasn't acting aggressively at all. What it is wrong with people?

@Tonia Agreed. I wonder if it was raised in Toronto as it appeared to be pretty tame and even solicitous of humans.

They are truly beautiful animals....I wish they could of tranquilized the animal and moved it north...why kill it....learn to live with these animals, we could learn alot from them....

@Julia 'Alot' is not a word. 'a lot' is two words, just thought you should know. Have a nice day. :)

@Julia what could we learn from coyotes that we didn't already know. frankly, they arent that attractive. any seen in dense areas SHOULD be shot, merely because it is a potentially dangerous situation for children and pets.

Julia and Tonia obviously grew up on Wile E. Coyote; This is a wild animal that, if it had had an opportunity, would have killed and eaten somebody or their pet. This animal was looking for food, not a cuddle.

@John ...That's right John! ...'Cus we have bodies stacked like cord-wood from coyote attacks! Why, they're so common, the media just doesn't bother reporting on them any longer!

The ravines are full of coyotes. But they're such solitary animals that they're rarely seen by humans. This one, from it's behaviour may have been rabid or something... But we do not, in fact have coyotes knocking people down, ripping their throats out and dragging their bodies away... John may have seen too many slasher movies...

@John It was known about for days and Coyotes are not totally lacking of intelligence. It would have had plenty of opportunity to attack someone in the time that it had been in that area, but didn't. Why? because a single Coyote is very unlikely to attack an adult human and on top of that (to counter what you said about them killing someone) they just aren't large enough to kill an adult (unless working in packs). They absolutely would attack a child (one did as I recall last year in Oakville) or persons pet. Yes it was a danger to the public, but given its proximity to the police officers in this video tranquilize (and relocating it) it would have been the better thing to do.

kind of reminds me of the same "ideology" why the Americans decided to invade Iraq and Afghanistan. They "think" it will attack a human or a pet, so kill it. Has it done so yet? Is there any proof that it has? Why kill something because of what it's capable of doing? Police officers have guns, and can kill someone. Do we charge them with murder because of what they can do weather or not they have done it yet? Stupid.....
    1. John posted on 02/12/2013 10:01 AM
@Mootmar So you want to wait until the coyote actually kills someone or their pet before the police react? Talk about stupid!

@Mootmar that is the worst analogy ever, and unfair, to be honest. coyotes living the suburbs SHOULD be trapped if feasible, killed if done safely.

Agree, capture and relocate north of the cty. How about Jane and Finch?

@Scott I am just wondering how come animal control never seems to step in? Should they not be there to make the call as to what would be best for the animalanimal .

Poor little guy...if he only had on a turban or proved that he was gay, he'd still be alive now....so said that we destroy nature because we dont understand anyyhing anymore...but then again..if rob ford got him first..he would of ate him so the bullet perhaps was the most humane thing in that retrospect...sad

@matt There are so many ignorant things in your statement I just don't even know where to begin with you.....

@matt your reference to Ford just shows what a mean-spirited, miserable person you must be.
