Police shoot coyote seen roaming Cabbagetown

Posted By: Michelle Rosa · 2/12/2013 6:26:00 AM

Residents of Cabbagetown can rest a little easier.

A coyote or a mix-breed coyote/wolf that had wandered into the Carlton and Parliament Street area Sunday evening. Apparently, it came back Monday night and that's when police shot and killed the animal.

They tried to surround the coyote, but say it became aggressive.

Toronto police say, "officers tried to get the coyote back into the ravine, however that failed, at which time, officers had to discharge their firearms and destroy the animal for the safety of the public."

Police are advising Torontonians to be careful and vigilant. Coyotes don't normally attack humans but they urge you not to leave young children unsupervised and if you happen to be confronted by a coyote, the best way to defend yourself is to wave your arms, make loud noises and throw objects at them. Slowly back away from the animal if those measures don't work.

kind of reminds me of the same "ideology" why the Americans decided to invade Iraq and Afghanistan. They "think" it will attack a human or a pet, so kill it. Has it done so yet? Is there any proof that it has? Why kill something because of what it's capable of doing? Police officers have guns, and can kill someone. Do we charge them with murder because of what they can do weather or not they have done it yet? Stupid.....

@Mootmar So you want to wait until the coyote actually kills someone or their pet before the police react? Talk about stupid!

@John Tranquilize it instead. That's the humane thing to do.

@Mootmar And you want the police to wait until somebody comes along with a tranquilizer gun? Not standard issue, you know.

@John Disgraceful and just Wrong!!!! Gun happy cops! Wonder if these cops are also hunters! John You are just plain ignorant!! I have lived around coyotes for 20 yrs. and NEVER encountered an incident....not with children, adults, not with my cats...not with my dogs nor my min. goats and not one feather was ever harmed on my ducks. My horses did not even lift theirs heads when a Coyote passed in front of them. How often do you hear in the news about Coyotes...Talk about STUPID!!!!

@Mootmar that is the worst analogy ever, and unfair, to be honest. coyotes living the suburbs SHOULD be trapped if feasible, killed if done safely.

@Nora You live, or lived, in the country and never encountered an incident. How nice for you. Coyotes in the city are a different kettle of fish - you may have noticed that the number of people in the city is somewhat larger than on a farm. Coyotes looking for food are opportunistic - they see any smallish creature moving around as possible lunch. That includes pets and children. Would you rather the police stand back and let the coyote carry off the neighbour's kid, or yours?
