Grades Important Factor For Student Aid: Tories

Posted By: Katie Franzios · 2/12/2013 2:17:00 PM

Ontario's Tories want university and college students' marks to determine if they get money from the province.

Progressive Conservative Training, Colleges and Universities Critic MPP Rob Leone says any form of student aid should be given to those with top marks. The former professor also wants students to prove they're putting any money given towards education.

This is all part of a PC bid to scrap the Liberals 30 per cent tuition grant. Leone underlines that the majority of Ontario students don't qualify for the grant, pointing specifically to single parents who are going back to school.

Leone adds schools should be the ones administering financial aid since they know their students better.

This is VERY wrong and so mean! Our school systems already cater to the brightest and best. What about kids who need a hand up to be successful? The tories call the Liberals elitists - what is this. My kids are above average students. They struggled in University for a number of reasons. I would have hated to see them "cut off" because they didn't have top marks in their first year because they have top marks now! We are fortunate enough that our kids didn't qualify for much student loan, so it is on our nickel for the most part, but cutting them off woud have been a big mistake. A lot of kids with less than top marks work much harder and deserve the support.

As a progressive voter, I will agree that the current 30 percent tuition grant does not work for a majority of the students. Single parents who have been out of high school for more than five years do not qualify while students from well-off families and who have recently graduated from high school do qualify.

I would suggest reducing the tuition for everyone by 15 percent or give deserving students a much larger tuition grant.

    Scholarships are for high marks.
Student loans and grants are for the high percentage of students who need financial assistance other than from family and their own jobs.

A simplistic idea that cannot work... but sounds good for a 15 second sound bite on the news.

"Whodat" strikes again ... musing for votes through a rookie MPP (Rob Leone) ... but missing the "mark" for competence.
