Matlow pushes for youth anti-violence strategy

Posted By: Michelle Rosa · 2/13/2013 6:11:00 AM

A 15 year old boy was killed on Monday night in the Jane St. and Finch area at a TCHC complex and there are questions whether this was a targeted or random shooting.

Either way, councillor Josh Matlow wants city council to address violence among youth in Toronto. He has been trying to push an anti-violence initiative before this shooting, but is now planning to ask municipal officials to create a youth violence strategy as well as more community groups and an anti-racism plan.

Matlow will ask city councillors to demand an update on the response from the city and the province regarding a 2008 report titled "Roots of Youth Violence."

This shooting also prompted NDP MP Olivia Chow to release a statement: "Sadly, he is the third youth killed by guns in Toronto this year. To prevent youth violence, we must do more."

our politicians don't have the guts to do what REALLY needs to be done. Prioritize the issue! Start with what's known and work backwards instead of the opposite which will have the least impact.

Start by going after the people with guns as they're the ones who are causing the killings. Police know who they are so create legislation to go after them. Then work your way backwards towards programs.

That's the way to have the greatest impact on saving lives but these politically correct politicians, legislators and police don't have the balls to do it.

Instead they waste billions on going after law-abiding citizens for nothing infractions for optics. Gun registry a perfect example.

Another is the 0.05 alcohol tolerance. If they spent their resources going after the people that actually killed/injured people drunk driving they'd focus their resources on the perpetrators (those well over the limit first), then work backwards if necessary.

Typical attitude. Inconvenience the entire society because optically it looks like you're doing something when in fact you're doing little.

How many more innocent people will die because of this political correctness and lack of guts?

Carloads of armed gang members skulk around Toronto at night. I hope police can stop and search them, seize their weapons and get them off the street. I think police have the right to stop gang members frequently to search for weapons and drugs.

We really need councillors to provide leadership on youth issues.
