New research finds at least 3,000 confirmed residential schools deaths

New research has found at least 3,000 children are now known to have died during attendance at Canada's disgraced Indian residential schools.

Researchers with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission tell The Canadian Press that the findings are the result of search of government, school and other records.

It's the first time fatalities have been quantified based on systematic research.

Research manager Alex Maass says the number could rise further as more documents - especially from government archives - come to light.

Diseases such as the Spanish flu and tuberculosis accounted for most of the deaths, but some students succumbed to accidents or abuse.

Maass says most of the dead children have been positively identified, although about 500 remain nameless.

The whole situation need serious attention. Many of the actual victimizers have long passed away; but many of the victims are still alive. The government has been working to 're-pay' them; however, I don't think money repairs the broken heart or cleans the dark memories.
May we find a workable, honest and 'righteous' soloution. To all those involved on the victim end (in one way or another): Forgive us. This never should have ever happened. We bless and honour you, Canada's First Nation People, to be who you are.

the kids brought up in these residences were treated by the priests and other authorities of the day; worse than the pre-civil war blacks of the south... no amount of apologies can rid history of this stain

Not to minimize the impact of being a child in these schools at the time, but this data is irrelevant without having the number of deaths of children during the same period of time who were not in residential schools. What is the average number of children who died from TB or the Spanish Flu? If there is a huge difference then THAT is the story.

If the greedy, lazy, corrupt chiefs on these reserves would quit misusing the federal money they receive, we wouldn't have situations like this. Better yet, if they would just integrate into Canadian life and quit clinging to their primitive way of life on this weak pretense of "tradition," they could actually contribute to society instead of being such a colossal, embarassing drain.

@Jack So it is the Native Americans fault that these priests and the government set up deplorable conditions for these children to live in? Their fault that the children were sexual, mentally, and physically abused? Their fault that the government came in essentially stole the children away from families to "integrate" them into the lifestyle that they thought was best?

You are delusional if you think for a second that this was anything but a disgusting act done by ignorant self-righteous bigoted pricks.

I just don't understand how someone can say what you just said and think it is justified. I don't throw this word around much at all, but you sound borderline racist just from that comment alone.
