Boy's jaw broken during arrest by Toronto Police, SIU steps in

Posted By: Siobhan Morris · 2/18/2013 4:22:00 PM

The SIU is investigating after a boy's jaw was allegedly broken during his arrest by Toronto Police.

Police say the arrest came as they were on pro-active patrol near Yonge St & Gould St Sunday night.

While talking to a group in a laneway, officers noticed a boy among them was showing characteristics of being armed.  Turns out, the 16-year-old was holding a loaded 9mm handgun.

The boy faces 8 gun-related charges.  He can't be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit steps in when someone is hurt or killed during an interaction with police.

While I don't like the idea that in the process of arresting someone the police broke their jaw, there aren't nearly enough facts as of yet to really have any full opinion on it. Did they initially just want to talk and he ran? Did he violently resist while being placed under arrest? Did the police just up and sucker punch him while he was already subdued? We don't know any of this yet.

Can people not wait until there are more facts before reaching their conclusions? Is that a lost art now?

@Brandon Brandon, he had an illegal, concealed, loaded 9 mm weapon. He wasn't out enjoying the evening air. Enough said. One more gun taken off the streets and in all probability a life or 2 saved. You carry a loaded weapon, you deal with the big boys.....or the cops. He's probably lucky it was the ops. Hard to sympathize, no impossible.

@Rob I agree, you don't get nice treatment if you carry an illegal weapon, but if the cops came up, and he didn't resist or run and the cop just cold cocked him, that's abuse of power, and makes the cops look like the very thugs they are trying to get off the streets.

But that is just speculation. Like I said, I don't have all the facts.

@Brandon No matter how you cut it, he had a LOADED illegal weapon, he was up to no good. Sorry, not much sympathy here. I don't know wht happened, but I fully support the cops. I can imagine how enraged it would make you to find someone carrying a loaded, illegal gun and knowing that absolutely nothing could could come from it.
