UPDATE: Gas Plant Contempt Motion Going Forward

Posted By: Katie Franzios · 2/19/2013 2:02:00 PM

The gas plant cancellation issue is rearing its head again at Queen's Park, with the Tories pushing forward with the contempt motion they introduced last year before the legislature was prorogued in October.

PC MPP Rob Leone says they have to get to the bottom of what he calls a cover-up in the Oakville and Mississauga gas plant cancellations that cost taxpayers at least $230 million.

Last fall, former Energy Minister Chris Bentley was the target of the motion but now the Tories want answers from the Wynne government.

Premier Kathleen Wynne has said she would strike a committee to look into both gas plant cancellations, but the Progressive Conservatives (PC) claim it wouldn't be allowed to address any contempt motion. PC House leader Jim Wilson says that's why they want yet another committee to address it.

The Tories say they find it hard to believe the the premier had nothing to do with the Mississauga gas plant cancellation decision before the 2011 election, as she has maintained, given she was campaign co-chair.

They believe there are more documents that need to be released regarding the cancellations. The Liberal government has released thousands of documents on two different occasions so far.

Meantime, John Milloy underlines the province told opposition parties they can look into whatever they want when it comes to the gas plant cancellations.

The Government House Leader says the only stipulations the province spoke of when it comes to committees was timelines, underlining the committee could take as long as it needed.

Milloy says he's disappointed to hear the PCs want to continue along with the contempt motion because it proves they don't want to work with the minority Liberals.

He notes if the Tories do in fact introduce the motion in the legislature, he hopes debate won't be stalled to deal with this.
