Video: Mayor Ford Doesn't Know 'What More We Can Do' About Youth Gun Violence

Posted By: Russ Courtney · 2/19/2013 4:40:00 PM

In the wake of recent gun violence in the GTA that's left four boys under 16 dead, Toronto Mayor Rob Ford says there are no easy answers.

"It's frustrating," said Ford outside his second floor office at city hall Tuesday. "I don't know what more we can do."

Ford, himself a father of two young children, passed along his condolences to the families that have lost loved ones to recent violence.

"It must be absolutely terrible to lose your son or daughter at 15," said Ford.

"It really bothers me when I hear about this," said the Mayor. "We're trying our best...we're putting in more money for the arts, for rec programs...If I had an answer for it, I'd implement it."

Ford doesn't think more debate at council is doing to do much and says more cash isn't the answer either.

"We've invested money in the programs. Throwing money at it is not the solution. It's not working," said Ford who also told reporters "the police are doing everything they can."

Ford, a high school football coach, says for kids on the wrong path being able to listen can make a huge difference.

"They're good kids but they just need some direction. They get caught up at the wrong time and that's it, they lose their life."

Such a horrible situation but, as Ford says, what more can be done?
Ban guns/bullets? - Criminals aquire them anyway.
More rec programs? - Gangsters aren't interested and a young man with major problems at home will gravitate to a surrogate family ie gangs.
Force young men to stay with the women they impregnate? - How? It's still a free country.
Perhaps we could use financial incentives to young, at-risk women to NOT get pregnant. A monthly stipend that ends with her first pregnancy. In a culture that seems to hold in high regard men who father a lot of kids with different women, it could be enough to change some attitudes.

About 14 years ago when my kids were younger we were at McDonalds for dinner. A man with a young son was sitting beside us reading a Toronto Sun. Obviously the son was also looking at the paper because he asked his dad - " Dad,,, why do black people carry guns ??" The father awkwardly shushed the kid and continued to read.

It's weird, but I have always remembered this. It taught me that prejudices are real and learned and sometimes justified. While poverty contributes to youth violence, there are many poor who do not turn to guns and ignore parental responcibility.

These entitled keep getting there contracts renewed and a new company can never get a foot in the door..new vision..new methods..new blood. The animals that are doing the shootings...how did they get to toronto??? why are they here??? the immigration process has completely failed..now peacefull taxpayers are being endangered by these animals...they live in public housing!!! my house and yours...send the police into every unit to see whats going on. Clean up these neighbourhoods immediately...send anyone back to the prisons they came from what was there countries...these are my tax dollars...my housing..my neighbours...my streets..these animals need to be stopped. How about we have an immigration system that screens people more rigorously and deports people at the first sign of trouble. The kid who robbed Mitchell Wilson...he and his mother were Jamaican, he didn't seem troubled by what he did, and his mother didn't seem concerned about it either. Canadian Border Services should have been waiting outside the court to ship them home. Instead, I have no doubt that little you-know-what will grow up to be another miscreant. As will his partner in crime.
