The Exhibition stands its Ground

Posted By: Newstalk 1010 · 2/23/2013 10:11:00 AM

The president of the Canadian National Exhibition promises the time-honoured tradition will not take a backseat to a casino.

Brian Ashton tells the Toronto Sun there is no way the Ex will go down without a fight if CNE is picked as the site of a proposed multi-million dollar casino.

Ashton believes faithful CNE fans would revolt if a casino snuffed out the fair and adds that most Toronto residents would not be in favour of a casino at the CNE if it put the summertime institution in jeopardy.

Officials with entertainment giant MGM are in the process of talks with Ashton, discussing the idea sharing the CNE property.  However, Ashton has come to the conclusion that the Ex could not survive if a casino was built on its territory.

City Council makes the final call on the casino question in April.

Boo Hoo Brian Ashton. Sorry to hear that your job as a two week per annum Carnie Sympathizer is coming to an end.
This is a world class city with great potential and a world class resort bringing jobs and money is a step towards an even greater future.
It would be quite a sight to all 3 faithful CNE fans revolting.
Maybe they could do it as a Harlem Shake to give us a bigger laugh.

@Real World Torontonian Agar, is that you?
So a "world class city" with a bright future with a casino at its heart, Booze in the corner stores, p/t jobs with no security...sounds like Detroit.
How about you take the "real world" Torontonians down the QEW move to the "world class" city of your choice & leave what remains of Toronto the Good behind; clearly you're not happy here.

Hmmmm...Casino owners having problems finding a place to set up shop? Isn't that why the province had to strike a deal with the race tracks for their slots in the first place? No one else wanted them.
If they are building a casino because they think there is a genuine market for it then I have no problem with that.
If the province needs it as a source of revenue, well, that's just pathetic. Enjoy your extra taxes, gamblers. I'm sure you'll hit the big one though.
