*UPDATE* Mayor accused of continuing to lobby for donations

Posted By: Dave Bradley · 2/28/2013 12:17:00 PM

New allegations that Toronto Mayor Rob Ford is still lobbying city hall lobbyists trying to get them to donate money to his charitable foundation.

The Toronto Star has been shown the plain letterhead fundraising letters sent to at least 2 lobbyists, with the Mayor's signature on them.

The executive director of the Residential and Civil Constructions Alliances of Ontario got his letter January 28th, just three days after the Mayor won his appeal in the conflict of interest case that sprang from his solicitation of donations from lobbyists 4 years ago.

Andy Manahan is quoted as calling this a Ford "indiscretion" but one less serious than others . In his words "you never know what a mayor's office could do to put a monkey wrench into your dealings with the city."

The Mayor is in Florida and his people have not responded to a Star request for comment but councillor Doug Ford insists that this letter is a "mass mailer" which does not target lobbyists specifically.

The Mayor's office did release a statement on Thursday afternoon.

It is our understanding that the Football Foundation makes every attempt to remove registered lobbyists from its mass mailing lists.  If errors were made, they were inadvertent.  The Foundation will review and look for ways to improve its processes.  In any case, it is our understanding that the Foundation has not received any donations from lobbyists and it is Foundation policy to return such donations if they were to be received in error.

Oh come on! This is getting downright silly and theses idiots, along with the Star better have overwhelming proof for making these allegations or pay for it in court. This nasty vendetta is just ridiculous and the perpetrators look like the fools that they are. I hope he sues them this time. Are you up for it Clayton?

@Barb overwhelming proof, for example, the actual letters themselves? That called a "smoking gun" by the way.

Rob Ford will never learn, nor does he really want to.

@Barb ford has no excuse this time. He can't fain ignorance this time around.

Both times ford has been up on conflict charge, there was overwhelming truth. It just that the people handing down the final verdict went easy on ford. This time whom ever is in charge, better punish ford.

The Mayor's stupidity -- or is it his arrogance -- knows no limits.

is it any different than councillors being invited to corporate boxes at ACC with whom they're doing business? Ask vaughan

Like Tom Jakobek (amongst others) accepting flights on corporate jets down to Philadelphia from MFP Computers (Dash Domi)?

for a man who wanted to bring some "respect for taxpayers" to city hall, he sure seems to flaunt the laws and rules that he should be following to set a shining example. i'm beginning to lose faith in our justice system, it only seems to punish those who demand a higher standard from their elected officials.

@Lisa Yes, and luckily we will be voting out the liberals in this province at the next election. thanks for your timely and relevant comment.

The original complaint was that he was using city letterhead to solicit donations to a private charity.

So he fixed that and is now soliciting donations to the charity NOT using city letterhead.

So the Toronto Star should get lost. I am beyond being tired of their witch hunt. I hope they go bankrupt and none of their employees ever get another job.

@Ted all of their employees? really? Even the janitors and the people who write condo/life/weather articles should never get another job? Kind of harsh.

left wing idiots, these letters are occupant letters sent to every one in certain neighbourhoods on any given day of the week, just like the flyers you get every week. are they personally addressed to any one ? the star forgot to say that.if it is not addressed to any one then every body in the city will eventually get one. just more bullcrap from the star.
