Province Reacts to ETFO's Decision

Posted By: Katie Franzios · 3/1/2013 6:19:00 AM

There are no scathing words from education minister to the Elementary Teachers' Federation of Ontario (ETFO).

While Liz Sandals says in a written statement that she's disappointed with ETFO's decision, the government is please with what she calls the meaningful ways the union has tried to work together.

Sandals underline the only way for the education sector to progress is to have strong relationships with teachers.

She says she looks forward to more constructive conversations with ETFO.

Meantime, the Tories says Premier Kathleen Wynne's promise for a better process failed miserably. Education Critic Lisa MacLeod says the fight between the province and ETFO continues to be taken out on kids.

However, NDP MPP Peter Tabuns underlines the province created the conflict with Bill 115 and they have to work hard to clean up what he calls a mess.

It is time to take the education system back from the union bosses! I don't see how Sam and his band of commies can legally fine and shame teachers for volunteering their time outside of school hours. How can these union bosses cry about how their rights have been violated, yet they do not respect their member's democratic rights. When right to work comes to Ontario, these guys won't know what hit them.

Jeff, It's not just the union hogs that are the problem, it's also a significant number of the spoiled radical teachers that infest our public education systems. These condescending hogs are the scourge of our society and their behaviour sets a horrible selfish example to our children. "Teaching" is not a calling anymore. It's a place in line to feed at the public trough. The idiot Liberals have spoiled the teachers to the extent that they have now become insatiable in their extreme demands. I would have liked to have seen the turmoil continue to the end of the school year and then to have all the teachers fired and the union crushed. Then, over the summer, the Liberal asses could have rebuilt and hired replacements for the hogs.

@Mark yes the teachers have been spoiled with raises that have basically mirrored inflation over the decade of liberal rule. In other words they will make the same amount (in real dollars) at the end of this contract that they did when Mike Harris left office. These are spoiled people in line at the trough? Really?

If the rest of the goverment kept to the same policy of raises that mirrored inflation then I don't think we'd have the trouble we have. They didn't. But people aren't smart enough to look at the real problems in government (and here's a clue - it's not the average teacher salary).

Remember the Financial Post article citing a study that the effective salary of teachers is over $ 100,000.

As to Sam Hammond's comments that teachers aren't protesting the refusal of extra curricular activities, it should be obvious to anyone with minimal intelligence that if you threaten and blacklist teachers that don't go along with the union mantra they're hardly going to reveal themselves.

@proton you're very right about that 2nd part Proton. A lot of teachers want to resume extras (actually never wanted to drop them to begin with) but they'd be blacklisted by their union and some of their co-workers. Not exactly a great choice.

The vast majority of teachers have zero intersest in all this garbage and would be thrilled if they were made essential workers and to just have their salaries mirror the inflation rate going forward. All this stuff does is cause more friction into their lives and they want no part of it (this is why the union leader doesn't hear from them). It's not worth the trouble.
