UPDATE: Search for man in Florida sinkhole called off

Posted By: Siobhan Morris · 3/2/2013 2:31:00 PM

The search for a Florida man swallowed up by a sinkhole has been called off.

Hillsborough County Administrator Mike Merrill says they haven't been able to determine the whereabouts of Jeff Bush.

37-year-old Bush was in his bedroom at home in Seffner, Fla. Thursday night, when the earth gave way, takin him & everything else in the room. 5 other people were in the house but managed to escape. Bush was supposed to move out of the house on Saturday.

Sunday morning, engineers will demolish the house with Bush still in the hole.

Merrill says teams at the scene have done everything they believe they can. "We wish we could have done more, but given the circumstances, I could not put more people at risk", said Merrill.

He calls the sinkhole extemely large, " a huge casm, extending down 50, 60 feet."

Saturday morning, the house next-door to where the sinkhole opened was declared by engineers to have been "compromised".  The family who lives there was given half an hour to go in & grab as many of their belongings as they could. The family was crying outside as they organized boxes.

Experts say the underground of West Central Florida looks similar to Swiss cheese, with the geography lending itself to sinkholes.
