UPDATE: Man found dead after police standoff in Northern Quebec
A standoff that started after a police officer was killed in northern Quebec is over.
Provincial police Sergeant Daniel Thibodeau says the man involved in the standoff was found dead inside the home Sunday afternoon. The man's name & details about how he died haven't been made public.
27-year-old Steve Dery of Ottawa & another officer with regional police went to investigate a fight between a man & a woman at the home in the Inuit community of Kuujjuaq late on Saturday.
Shots were fired at both officers. Dery died in hospital. The other officers injuries aren't life-threatening.
Police say the woman involved in the despite managed to escape from the home unhurt.
"Everybody's in shock and disbelief,'' said Johnny Adams, a former Kuujjuaq councillor. "We're just praying for the families involved."
Kuujjuaq is the largest northern village in the region, with a population of about 2,400.
