A rescue effort in North York has now changed to a recovery operation.

Toronto Police have confirmed the man trapped at the bottom of a pit on Clayson Road has died of his injuries.

Early information had suggested the man was trapped at the bottom of the pit or trench, under a concrete slab.

Despite the efforts of rescuers, they couldn't reach the man in time.

His name hasn't been released and the Ministry of Labour will now be called in to investigate.
