UPDATE: Charges laid after baby killed in Kitchener crash

Posted By: Justine Lewkowicz · 3/17/2013 10:28:00 AM

Police have laid charges after a crash in Kitchener that killed a baby girl.

A disabled Jetta was sitting in the right lane of Highway 7/8 Saturday evening when it was hit from behind by a cube van.

The Jetta had three occupants - a 17-month-old girl and her parents. The baby was killed. The man suffered minor injuries. The woman is in hospital with critical condition.

Police say it's unclear whether they were inside or out of the car at the time they were hit.

The driver of the van was arrested.

53-year-old Hugh John Brake is facing eight charges including impaired driving causing death, dangerous operation of a vehicle, possession of marijuana and obstructing justice.

I hope the baby was in a car seat.

How many more times are they just going to "lay charges" for impaired driving? We need to do something more permanent to these menaces.

@Bill R That would require people to stop voting Liberal. Not going to happen.

OMG-- Unfortunately people are not getting the message about drinking and driving.
Until the law changes we can expect more of the same.
I hope the Judge throws the book at this guy and he spends a healthy amount of time sitting in jail contemplating his poor choices and the grief he has caused everyone.

Just my opinion but drunk drivers are never going away. You could make the penalty death and still there will be people who try to get away with it. Unless you want to pay for R.I.D.E. programs on every major intersection or have mandatory interlocks in EVERY vehicle there will be drunk driving and, as a result, more tragedies.
Having said that, more could be done to prevent repeat offenders. Confiscating license plates or entire vehicles comes to mind. Driving without a plate tends to get the atention of cops.
