UPDATE: TDSB trustee on ventilator after house fire
A longtime Toronto District School Board trustee is on a ventilator after a fire at her west-end home.
Irene Atkinson was rushed to hospital Saturday night, suffering from severe smoke inhalation. She's being treated in intensive care.
Flames started in the kitchen of the home on High Park Blvd around 7pm & then spread. One other person was hurt. The Ontario Fire Marshal's office is investigating the cause of the blaze.
TDSB vice-chair Shaun Chen says the thoughts of the board are with Atkinson & her family.
Premier Kathleen Wynne, herself a former TDSB trustee, tweeted her concern for Atkinson saying "My prayers are with Irene."
Toronto Mayor Rob Ford, NDP MPP Rosario Marchese & councillor Josh Matlow, both former trustees, also took to twitter to express support for Atkinson and her family.
In January, Atkinson received the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal for her service of more than 35 years as trustee.
