Councillor seeks ban on killing and feeding coyotes
A city councillor thinks the public's reaction to coyotes is off-base. Councillor Glen De Baeremaeker is pursuing a ban on killing and feeding the creatures.
His request to staff for a report on updating policies for dealing with coyotes was at Tuesday's Licensing and Standards committee meeting, with the hope of having it presented in September.
Last month, Toronto police shot and killed a coyote that was roaming around Cabbagetown.
De Baeremaeker says people have misplaced fear about coyotes, and what we really need is more education about them. But he adds, clear-cut rules would help emergency responders know when a coyote really is a threat.
De Baeremaeker says the coyote wasn't a threat, but shooting a gun on Toronto streets is.
