TTC chair not ruling out bringing back vehicle registration tax

Posted By: Justine Lewkowicz · 3/19/2013 4:19:00 PM

TTC chair Karen Stintz is not ruling out bringing back the vehicle registration tax.

She says before making a concrete decision on the tax, she will wait to see what staff members recommend when they complete public consultations on how the government should pay for transit expansion.

But Stintz says if the tax were to come back, the revenue would have to be dedicated to something like transit expansion, which it wasn't before it was scrapped in 2010.

"We learned a lesson that it wasn't dedicated to transit, it wasn't dedicated to anything," Stintz says. "And so people didn't see value for that investment."

Councillor Michael Thompson voiced a similar opinion a couple of weeks ago.

Stintz also suggests that the vehicle registration tax could come back at a lower amount than the previous $60 a year.

"Sixty dollars may have been too much," Stintz says.

The tax should not be just focused on those who live within the City of Toronto.

Most people that I know who live within the city DO NOT drive to work, but rather use TTC.

How about focusing on all of the GTA...heck even Milton, Cambridge, Bowmanville etc...

A large majority of people coming from out of town are driving into the city.

If I have to pay the tax, for only use in the evening or on weekends.....I will definately think about driving to work to offset the cost. (Just like I did before)

If putting the fees of owning a car within the city to pay for TTC....its kind of like paying for apples and getting oranges. They don't really corelate.

If the tax were to to go road repair...I would suggest getting a toll....and suprisingly enough you would realize that most cars are coming from out of town.

Like the dual land-transfer tax, and to re-instae the car tax....its just pushing people out of the city because not everyone who owns a home or has a car is "rich".

@Dhalia Cross purposes; massive development in the downtown to prevent that US Style 'hollow core'; then goofy lefties all start chanting 'tax the f out of them' so that they all leave.

These morons don't know if they are coming or going. Impose a registration tax. Remove the tax. Bring back the tax. They make my head spin with their stupidity.

Here's an idea. Instead of shooting coyotes, can we just shoot Toronto City Councillors? Charge people $1,000/shot. We would raise millions (assuming some people missed), wipe out the debt (and the councillors), and we would all be a lot happier!

luckily the moron doesn't realize she isn't in control of that 'revenue lever' as chairperson of the TTC, and if she wants to bring in a vehicle tax, it will go to a council vote.

Will someone repeal this woman already? How long to we have to wait for the next election?

@CoffeeCon As soon as she helps to contract the garbage in the other half of the city, she can dedicate that money to her pet project that nobody wants.

Stintz have you lost every piece of good sense that you ever had, taxes like this is going to stop people from going into the city,.You have no power in any way to implement any kind of taxes or tolls without consultation with council. And we all know that this will have to go to some form of cosultant firm, who will gouge the taxpayer for a small fortune, and will definentally be linked to someones lefty buddies. Maybe it is time for you to back off and there might be a slim chance that you might be reelected in 2014. Or is tis a way to get the lefties legal bills paid by the taxpayers. GET A LIFE AND GIVE YOUR HEAD A SHAKE

Put an extra tax on the purchase of vehicles - not an annual fee - and scale it according to size and price. If you're buying a gas guzzler, a Porsche, or tricked out pickup, you should be able to afford a tax and help keep transit affordable for those who need it.

Put a tax on parking, and scale it according to size too. That directly addresses those who commute by car. If you're driving something small, you'll pay less tax. If there's more than one person in your vehicle you will share that tax.

Better a tax on something like purchasing cars than raising property taxes to increase revenue. Not everyone who owns a home is rich either. Better to add a land transfer tax for transactions over a certain amount - like say a million. Use that money for infrastructure.
