New Federal budget bill takes aim at unions' right to strike
A big red flag for the union movement in this country.
The Public Service Alliance of Canada says the Harper Government's new budget bill contains a clause that attacks the rights of hundreds of thousands of civil servants. The provision gives federal employers authority to unilaterally declare parts of the bureacracy essential service and prohibited from striking.
This clause would override collective agreements.
The government argument is that without this change, unions would continue to have, what amounts to, a veto over government attempts to designate some government jobs, such as those for safety or security of the public as essential services.
